Last September in Trinidad I celebrated having visited my 50th country and wrote a post (find it by clicking here) listing the nations I’d been to and linking to some stories I had shared about them.

This weekend I’ve hit the next interval with Cyprus being my 60th country!

Here are the places I’ve been in the past 8 months that have gotten me from 50 to 60:

50. Trinidad and Tobago

51. Puerto Rico (some people might not count this since it is technically part of the U.S, but as it is not a State and has a very different culture, I do)

52. St. Kitts and Nevis

53. South Africa

54. Namibia

55. Zambia

56. Botswana

57. Saudi Arabia

58. Qatar

59. Egypt

60. Cyprus

I’ve also revisited a few countries in the meantime: Rwanda, Tanzania, and the UAE.

It has been interesting to see the number continuing to increase, especially as I am realizing that more and more I’m feeling inclined to visit familiar places again.  I decided to move back to the UAE, want to spend more time in Tanzania, and am thinking of visiting family in Germany and friends in Israel.  Of course, there are many new places I want to see- and hope to get to them sometime soon!  It will be an interesting balance to see how I spend my future travels.  I’ll keep you updated : )

The British South Africa Company established governance in 1890 in what would become Zambia and Zimbabwe [and including the Kingdom of Barotseland because colonialism], calling the region Rhodesia (after Cecil Rhodes, the man behind the money).  Eventually, the region was split into Northern and Southern Rhodesia as protectorates of the British Empire, but they were politically tied together again in the late 1950s, along with Nyasaland (Malawi), for a brief stint at confederation, before all three (Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi) all gained independence in the mid-1960s.  [But not Barotseland.]  Imperialism!

bestiarium:The Chitapo [Lamba mythology; African mythology]River and lake spirits are a very common

bestiarium:

The Chitapo [Lamba mythology; African mythology]

River and lake spirits are a very common motif in myths and legends from around the world. One such example is the Chitapo from the mythology of the Lamba people, who live in what is now Zambia.

This is a female lake spirit, who resides at the bottom of a lake and hoards diamonds and emeralds. Chitapo are malicious and lure people to a watery grave, not unlike sirens and mermaids in European legends. It is also said – though this part is a bit unclear – that when a child is born under ill omens, a Chitapo disposes it the newborn baby. I am not sure how she does this, and what her motives are for doing so.

These beings are sometimes described as mermaids, with the upper body of an attractive woman and the lower body of a fish. However, this may not always have been the case, as some anthropologists propose that the mermaid-like imagery may have resulted from conflation between the myth of the Chitapo – a water spirit taking the form of a human woman – and the Funkwe – a giant water snake with the tail of a fish. The two myths do overlap to some extent, with locals claiming that the two creatures inhabit the same lakes in some instances, such as in lakes Nakamwale, Kashiba and Namulolobwe. It is also said that the Funkwe serves as a guardian for the Chitapo, and guards the latter’s treasure.

It is also possible that the Chitapo was changed into a mermaid under the influence of European colonists or travelers, who may have told stories about mermaids.

Lake Nakamwale has a different take, where the lake spirit often takes the form of a small diamond, which sits in the mouth of the giant snake, protecting it from harm.

☀️ Sunny, warm vibes from this gorgeous natural Citrine geode from a new find in Solwezi, Zambia! I love unheated Citrine, and I’m always on the hunt for neat localities—the specimens coming out of North-western Province in Zambia have a totally unique look which, at first glance, may remind you of the heated amethyst that commonly comes from Brazil and Uruguay. However, this unheated and untreated geode has an organic beauty that really sets it apart, and crystals are in great condition. This large geode is raw, powerful, and full of sunny Citrine energy! Dm for details or see it on PhenomenalGems.Etsy.com! ☀️ #naturalcitrine #notheatedamethyst #citrine #zambia #solwezi #northwesternprovince #newfind #citrinegeode #prettycrystals #mineralspecimens #mineralsforsale #rockshop #crystalshop #itsabeautifulmorning #sunnyday #yellowcrystals #manifestationcrystal #fireelement #solarplexuschakra #phenomenalgems #etsycrystals
