Hi Ladies! Remember we discussed Vlisco’s 170th Anniversary last week? This week we are talking about the avant-garde fashion show they put on at the event. I must say some of these designs blew my mind, here are the 5 designers who represented at the event. I like that Vlisco gave a different range of designers outside of the ones we usually hear of a chance to show off their creativity

First on the bill Stylista - Stylista is a luxury fashion house that has previously created a capsule collection for Vlisco in the past and I personally love their geometric cuts and tailored outfits.

image

Second on the list, Samson Kreation - Samson Kreation generally tailors to men but that did not stop them from creating these outifits for Vlisco. I haven’t personally heard of this brand, but the design house incorporated their usual clean lines and smart tailoring to construct these avant-garde outfits. Samson Kreation kept it quite safe to be honest, both outfits can be rocked on the red carpet ;)

image

Next up, Sarah Richards- This designer’s unique perspective on style definitely made a statement at the fashion show. Using sinnamen to create baskets that were incorporated into the elaborate gowns, Sarah Richards took avante-garde to a new level. The outfits were inspired by the 170thAnniversary celebrations, especially in the wax block outfit as it is in the shape of an upside down V. LOVE IT!

image

Next, Royal Dennis - Royal Dennis provides clothing for both men and women and they incorporated fascinators into their designs for the big night. I love the outfit with the trousers.

image

Last but not least - VH Mode by Vanessa Harrison: This Accra/London based style house is not afraid to push the boundaries of fashion. Headed by creative director Vanessa Harrison, the couture gowns unutilized different elements, such as mirrors, to dazzle the audience.

Hi Ladies! Here is a quick video showing you what the actual Vlisco Pret-A-Couture journey is like. I have mentioned the awesome service so many times on the blog (Here, hereandhere) I think it is only right you actually get a visual of what it is like. Since I am not in Ghana myself, I have enlisted the help of the gorgeous Afua Rida who shares her Pret-A-Couture Journey!

Hi ladies! This week’s post is a little more informative, mainly because I think it is important that we take our body shapes into consideration before we either shop for clothes or before we wear certain types of clothes. You will be surprised to know that even printed clothes look ‘better’ on certain body types than others. However, please take this post as a guide, I am definitely not here to preach to you about what types of clothes you should (or shouldn’t) wear.

Also I know a few women who are scared to step on the scale or get their measurements taken and so they end up buying clothes a size too small. This happens especially when they try to use a service like Vlisco Pret-A-Couture and refuse to allow the tailors to take their measurements because they feel uncomfortable or are adamant that they know their measurements. Body weight and measurements tend to fluctuate frequently and so I definitely suggest that you get your measurements taken anytime you use a new tailor or when you want to use a service like Vlisco’s Pret-A-Couture. This way, you are assured that the tailor knows exactly what he (or she) is working with, which also determines where the patterns and prints will be placed on your outfit.

From my research, I have come across 5 main body types. I will go over each of them and then mention which types of clothes are suitable. If you are unsure of your body type, you can use this calculator to find out

image

a) Hourglass

This body shape has the bust and the hips at similar measurements thereby creating an hourglass figure. With this body shape, it is best to wear clothes that accentuate your waist but you are more likely able to get away with various types of clothes. Flattering outfit choices - high waisted skirts/trousers, wrap dresses/tops, A-Line skirts

image

Flattering Vlisco Pret-A-Couture Style

image

b) Triangle

Honestly, I think this is my favourite body type. You have a triangle shape (sometimes referred to as a pear shape) when your hips are wider than your bust area. Think Alicia Keys. With this body shape, we are trying to balance the shape out by creating an illusion of a bigger bust area or by drawing attention away from the bust area to the shoulders or back. Flattering outfit choices - v-neck tops, ruffled tops, off shoulder tops, A line skirts

image

Flattering Vlisco Pret-A-Couture Style

image

c) Inverted triangle

You have an inverted triangle shape if your bust is significantly larger than your hips. So in this situation, we are trying to create the illusion of bigger hips to balance the shape. Flattering outfit choices - printed trousers, draped skirts, ruffled skirts

image

Flattering Vlisco Pret-A-Couture Style

image

d) Oval

This body shape has a thick mid-section which extends beyond the bust and hips thereby preventing you from having a well defined waist. You can have this body shape whether you are slender or a little more weighty, it does not matter. With this body shape, we need to create the illusion of a waist and so some flattering outfit choices include dresses with belts, loose tops and dresses that have panels which can synch you in. Your underwear can also play a role, I will include a few types of undergarments that can help synch your waist.

image
image

Flattering Vlisco Pret-A-Couture Style

image

e) Rectangle

This body shape is frequently referred to as a banana, athletic, boyish, or straight and is quite similar to the oval shape only that the midsection is not larger than the hips and bust. Again, with this shape, we are trying to create the illusion of a waist or draw attention from the ‘disproportion’

image

Flattering Vlisco Pret-A-Couture Style

image

Hope this post helps you decide on which outfits flatter your body shape! I personally fluctuate between rectangle and oval so you will mainly catch me in loose flowy tops, skirts and dresses, also Ghana is too hot to wear tight clothes all the time! Again, this post serves as a guide, it is not the end all be all of outfit choices! I think confidence is the most important factor, if you feel like you look good and are confident enough to rock whatever outfit, then go right ahead!!

Check out my other fashion posts here

Getting an outfit from Vlisco Pret-A-Couture’s line is simple! All you need to do is go to Accra Mall any day from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 6pm. Once you get there, you will be asked to look through the rack of sample clothes (which you can also try on) and choose the style and then the fabric you would like. You are free to mix and match prints and styles as you please. After that, the tailors will take your measurements, even if you already have your measurements from your old tailor. This is to make sure that they get the right cut and fit for your body type. Your contact details will be taken and the tailors will let you know when you can come back for a fitting / pick up your outfit (usually within 14 days). I personally think this service is a great idea mainly because their tailors are true specialists in print placement, a skill not every tailor has. I think the way in which a print is used defines the design and so you don’t want to take your fabric to any old tailor who you cannot be assured of.

Welcome back to my blog! This week’s Woman Crush features Marie Humbert, who is more recently known for her role as Makeena on An African City. If you are new to the blog, we have a weekly #wcw segment where we feature different types of women from all across the world and get them to share some of their beauty and style secrets with us! So far we have heard from Lydia Forson,Hayet Rida(thathayetrida.com),Anita Erskine,Ama K. Abebreseh,Kokui Selormey,Dede Buckman (accracraves) and so many more fabulous women! Click hereto read their stories

Without any extra yip yapping, scroll down to find out about Marie’s beauty & style tips and tricks

Tell us about yourself

My name is Marie Humbert and I am an actress. My father is from Switzerland and my mother is from Ghana. I am fluent in both French and English and I have had the wonderful opportunity of living all around the world.

What gave you the confidence to pursue your dream of becoming an actress?

I was always a very loud and energetic child. I loved being the center of attention by entertaining people and making them laugh. I realized I was quite good at it so I decided to take acting classes around the age of twelve. It wasn’t until I was about sixteen that it was evident acting had become more of a calling than just an extracurricular activity. I then studied Theatre Arts in university in Australia and received a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Drama. I continued on and received a ‘Best Actress’ award of the year at the famous acting school, Le Cours Florent’ in Paris, France. I decided then that I had reached the point of no return!

image

What do you love most about your job?

I love being able to delve into the world, life and psyche of a character, not only is it captivating but also highly inspirational as I have learnt and keep learning so much from the characters I have the opportunity to play.

image

[An African City Season 2 - Marie as Makeena]

If you could go on vacation anywhere tomorrow, where would you choose? Bali is on top of my list but I would also really like to visit Cuba, Argentina and Greece.

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

First I would buy a present for my mother, father and brother. Then I would buy/build my dream home in Provence or south of France, or in Florence, basically a dream home in a dreamy location! How would you describe your sense of style? Chic, elegant, effortless. There are a few different sides to me therefore my style can vary from being quite lady-like and structured to rather androgynous and 'laid back’ cool. But I must say I am obsessed with the details of a garment, I always believe it’s all about the detail!

Are you a jeans or dresses kind of girl?

It depends on my mood and where I am going. I love wearing both styles equally.

image
image

What’s your favourite fashion trend at the moment?

Off the shoulder dresses and tops. I’m also still loving everything about crop tops!

What’s your earliest memory of Vlisco?

My mother has been a loyal Vlisco fabric customer since she was a young lady. I still love some of her 70’s Vlisco fabric, long, flared pants she designed or the 'Patapata’ traditional dresses she would wear for special occasions. I remember looking at her in awe, the fabric always brought out her confidence and femininity. She always looked so beautiful.

How do you feel when you wear an outfit from Vlisco?

Confident, strong, proudly African and feminine.

image
image

What’s your favourite Pret-A-Couture style and why?

I love this gorgeous suit they currently have at the Vlisco store in the Accra mall. It’s elegant, structured and bold. I love Pret - A- Couture because of how easy it is to get outfits tailored for you! It’s so simple and all done in just 5 steps. Choose a style from the look book or rack of sample outfits, then choose your fabric and get measured by the tailors – this is all done in one go and at the Vlisco shop in Accra Mall. Then you return for the fitting. Most of the time you get your outfit then as it’s usually a perfect fit. If not and it needs minor adjustments, it’s taken away and you get it back in no time at all. Overall it takes about two weeks and you have peace of mind, knowing that your Vlisco fabric won’t be ruined and you’ll get a perfectly finished outfit. And to top it all off, it’s very affordable.

image

What’s your favourite Vlisco outfit currently in your wardrobe and why?

My favorite is the last one I wore and had made especially for me! It is an embezzled cropped top with an equally embezzled, beautiful 'short in front and long at the back’ type of skirt. I keep updating my favourite Vlisco outfits every time I either buy or have one made!

image

How do you accessorize your Vliscofabrics?

The fabrics I like are vibrant so I always keep everything else simple.

image

Now, onto the hair questions - what do you LOVE most about your hair? The fact that it’s versatile. I’m mixed race so it’s fun to see how my hair can go from curly to sleek and straight.

What is your daily hair care routine?

I moisturize it with natural oils like coconut or baobab oil, then braid it before going to bed and just brush it out in the morning.

What is your favorite protective style?

A high bun or pony tail.

What bothers you about your hair?

How sensitive and fragile it is.

Do you have any hair/style tips you would like to share with us?

Always moisturize! Try to use products that are 100% natural especially oils, coconut, baobab and avocado are my favourite. Braiding or wrapping it before bed is a really good trick in keeping it soft and silky.

If you live in Ghana, you know we don’t play when it comes to our church outfits! The first look features a printed bag, just to give you that edge! Second look is a little more subtle but I love the pop of colour that the orange shoes bring.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Vered – Marian Anita Erskine! I am 37 years old! I am a wife, mother and the last of 8 children!

What gave you the confidence to pursue your dream of becoming a TV personality?

I never knew what exactly I wanted to be you know? I just felt whatever I committed my life to, had to include an opportunity to connect with people by being able to speak with them or talk to them! In September 1997, I walked into Metro TV which was situated at Pyramid House on the Ring Road in Accra. I asked them for an internship and they were happy to give it to me. A few weeks after they had me audition for a new live Saturday show called the Bold and Beautiful Omnibus! I loved being on TV! That experience gave me to confidence to pursue television!

image

What do you love most about your job?

I love that I am a story teller and a narrator! I love that I interact with people and they open up about their dreams, hopes, ambitions, failures and successes! When people tell you what they think, how they feel or what they have been through, it makes you respect them more and appreciate life!

If you could go on vacation anywhere tomorrow, where would you choose? Ibiza! I have only seen extremely exciting photos! Apparently it is an island that never sleeps! As I get older, I crave opportunities to get out of my comfort zone and do something wild!

If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

I would pay off ALLLLLLL MY debts! Buy two more houses, pay off my kids tuition for as many years as I can, pay my church dues off, take my parents, husband and children on holiday and move my company into the tallest building in Accra! Wait how much money would I have won? Ha-ha you see? I already have plans!

How would you describe your sense of style?

I am simple chiq. To be honest, I am only just discovering what I love. And that comes with discovering what I like and don’t like about my body. I am a very late bloomer! So I can say it’s only now that I am developing a true sense of style and it’s simple, comfortable, chiq and aspirational! Are you a jeans or dresses kind of girl? Absolutely jeans! I still have some pairs of long and lean jeans that I bought from the Gap in 2001! I bought them in every shade!!

What’s your favourite fashion trend at the moment?

It has to be my all black outfits and Adidas sneakers! It’s a self-made trend by the way!

What’s your earliest memory of Vlisco?

The moment my husband Regis told me about this Textile giant that was going to roll out a series of fashion shows that ultimately celebrated Women and helped Women express their individual style in a proud African Way! At the time, designers such as Christie Brown were just emerging and it was so exciting to see the breath taking outfits they were creating out of Vlisco!

How do you feel when you wear an outfit from Vlisco? Proud. Authentic. Feminine. Powerful.

image

Do you shop at Vlisco often? What’s your favourite outfit?

I love the wrap dress! It’s comfortable and totally sexy! It works for any time of the day or for any occasion! Oh and it’s so easy to get a Pret-a-Couture outfit made! There are over 20 designs to choose from in the Vlisco Pret-a-Couture catalogue which are all designed to mix and match with each other. Select one. Now select your Vlisco fabric. The Vlisco in house tailor will take your measurements and you’ll get a date for your first fitting! I have been a bit spoilt in the past because my outfits fit just fine! But Vlisco always advises you do a fitting to ensure you’re getting exactly what has been promised! When your outfit is ready, Vlisco will call you! And Voila! You’re ready to go! Custom made by Vlisco in a style of your choice and delivered in two weeks!

image

However, my absolute favourite Vliscooutfit has to be  my very first Vlisco outfit made for me by Christie Brown in 2009! It brings back memories – I had just become a mother, struggling to understand my life and Vlisco brought me closer to women from all walks of life and of all ages! We all had stories and one common passion…which is Vlisco! I will never forget that event and I never want to let go of that dress!

image

What’s been your experience of Prêt-a- Couture to date?

I have had the best experience ever! The tailors know exactly how to craft your chosen style to suit your body! I don’t know how they do it! And Vlisco is always very honest on delivery time, which is something I truly appreciate!

How do you accessorize your Vlisco fabrics?

Well it depends on where I am going! I have my VliscoGala – I always go with my bold rings and chandelier earrings! Then I have my Vlisco casual – dressy which you’ll most likely see me wear on television for any one of my shows! For this, I will do my simple pair of gold or diamond studs and let the outfit do the talking!

image

What do you LOVE most about your hair?

My Hair????!!!! Well my hair has too many lives. Right now it’s at that extremely short stage growing out. But let me tell you, I own about 7 wigs all beautifully crafted by my hair dresser Golden Silk Hair! The owner, Francesca, gets me! What can I say? I have hair for every occasion!

What is your daily hair care routine?

My scalp is very dry so I am obliged to I wash my hair at least twice a week and treat my scalp and hair line to some good old shea butter! What is your favourite protective style? Wigs! Wigs! And more Wigs! I have heard some horror stories, yes…but my wigs save the day anyday!

What bothers you about your hair?

It never understands what I need!

Do you have any hair/style tips you would like to share with us?

Embrace your hair however it comes! As funny or eerie as I may sound, your hair is a reflection of you! It grows what you feed it! If you treat it right, it will adorn you! If you couldn’t care less, it will frustrate you! Your hair is like your face, nails and teeth. It reflects the time you have for it….. Trust me, I have learned the hard way!

Stylingprints on the red carpet can be difficult and so I have compiled a list of celebs from Ghana who I think rocked them fabulously. If you check out this post, I talk about mixing and matching prints in general, which I think serves as a helpful guide.

I will need your help deciding who wore it best, make sure you vote when you are done reading this post!

First up - Efya
My Rating - 8/10

One of my favourites! I like the way Efya has owned her style; at the beginning of her career it seemed like she wasn’t really sure which look she wanted to go for but I must say, I’m loving her bold, unapologetic style these days. Of course, she wore this look on stage when she was performing and I absolutely love the combination of the mesh and the print! Of course the colour is stunning on her as well. I would have ditched the watch for some stacked bangles.

image

Second on the bill - Anita Erskine
My Rating 6/10

Another strong woman I admire! Again I like how simple the outfits are, because that way, the print itself can do the talking.

image

Loving the hair and the exposed zippers on this outfit! I think the colours work very well together, maybe an open toe shoe instead?

image

For this look I think a sleek bun would have worked better especially since both the dress and the style are so busy.

image

Gena West
My Rating - 9/10

It seems like im dishing out high ratings today! You guys know I am a sucker for a funky neckline and this dress fits right in! Not sure if I would rock the cape but hey! It is obviously not for everyone but It could work well on the red carpet. Apart from that, the dress itself is gorgeous, the slit is just right and the neckline of the dress is fantastic!

image

Wiyaala
My Rating - 6/10

like how different this outfit is, and I am a huge fan of the trousers, and for that I think it deserves a shot. However, I think we could have ditched the sequins for a more muted black and we could have swapped the blue eyeshadow for something more on the bronze side of things. Also where are the accessories? Let’s see some neck pieces, some bangles, some rings, funky clutches!

image

Last but not least - Eugenia Tachie-Menson
My Rating - 8/10

Another woman I admire a lot especially for her work with The Young Educators Foundation. I am enjoying this combination of prints and I think it immediately calls for an 8/10

image

Looks like Gena West is in the lead with a 9/10, vote below and let me know who you think wore it best!

Who Rocked The Vlisco Prints Best?

Efya

Anita Erskine

Gena West

Wiyaala

Eugenia

Girl, if you are anywhere near my age and older, best believe the wedding invitations have started rolling in IN THEIR NUMBERS. Here is some #fashion inspiration (because why not?) for your outfits! Make sure you vote for your favourite look at the end of this post!

A few key pointers to remember

a. you are a guest you are NOT the bride (your time will come, not to worry)

b. you are here to celebrate your friend(’s) happiness and not to find a new man of your own

c. you should wear something comfy (but still killem) so you can break it down when its time to get on the dance floor

That being said, here are 5 looks from #Vlisco that I think are wedding appropriate and I cannot actually wait to get my hands on them.

I think look 3 is my favourite, which look is your favourite? Comment below

Look 1

Okay look 1, we don’t want to look like we are doing too much, but we still want to look cute and all that. We are playing up on the blue in the fabric here and keeping the heels at a mid-height so as not to induce any ankle breakages

image

Look 2

Same dress, same bag, different shoes and some stacked bangles. Note: you will be noisy! I think this is my favourite look to be honest, I LOOOVEEE THE SHOES! The colour is subtle enough to not be like ‘hey look at me matching my shoes with my bag’ but they get the job done and tie everything together.

image

See More Below

Look 3

Same dress (Vlisco Pret-A-Couture), different bag, different shoes. Okay this look is for the #fashionkilla out there! LOVEEE the bag- it makes the outfit so fun! And I paired them with simple sandals instead of a closed toe pump just to draw attention to the bag instead of the shoes.

image

Look 4

Final look -  different Vlisco Pret-A-Couture dress. We definitely need to make a statement with that neck and lucky for us, chokers are back on trend now sooo there we go. Kept the shoes simple mainly because of the double print, the dress makes a statement on it’s own. Of course we can’t be totally boring with it and so I have paired this clutch with the outfit to bring a little oomph!

image

Look 5

This one is for the ladies who don’t want to show off too much leg but still keep it cute!

image

One may ask, how do I get my hands on these dresses? Well it is simple as pie

1. Go to Vlisco - Accra Mall any day from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 6pm to have your measurements taken by the tailors .This is a major key because the tailors will make sure they have the right sizing down (I know most of you think you know your size off hand, but you actually don’t)

2. Choose the style that you like from the look book or rack of sample clothes which you’re welcome to try on to make sure the style actually looks good on your body (more on that later) You can mix and match styles as you please - if you notice, the ‘skirts’ in both dresses above are the same and the ‘tops’ have been mixed. Then choose your Vlisco fabric from the wide selection available in the show.

3. The tailor will take down your contact details and let you know when to come back for a fitting/ pick up your outfit which is usually with 14 days.

The leading African print manufacturer, Vlisco and the sensational fashion designer, Royal Dennis, have  unveiled a new dynamic collection at the Vlisco store at the Accra Mall. This collaboration follows similar partnerships with Stylista, PoquaPoqu& Melanie Crane in 2016.

“Royal Dennis is one designer we at Vlisco are always excited to work with. He is very creative and pays attention to details. He is simply good”, said Stephen Badu, Marketing Director for Vlisco Ghana.

“I call this collection GOLDEN by ROYAL DENNIS. I wanted to show Royal Dennis in a new way. I wanted to center my collection around a major concept which then is translated into different styles.

The collection is created for a woman not afraid of real beauty, a woman in charge of her own femininity, a woman who is golden” said Dennis Dodoo, owner and Creative Director of Royal Dennis.

This will be on display at the Vlisco store from now till end of August 2017

About Vlisco

Welcome to the colourful design world of Vlisco. Since 1846, Vlisco has been creating unique textiles in Holland that have influenced the fashion landscape in West and Central Africa. These textiles reflect true Dutch craftsmanship and were originally known as ‘Hollandais’, from the French word for ‘Dutch’. Today, Vlisco is still the only brand creating authentic Dutch wax fabrics and is recognizable for its unique design, colours and wax craquelé, all of which combine to create this inspiring fashion statement. It can only be Vlisco!

Hi ladies! Here is a quick update from one of my faves - #Vlisco, just incase you were wondering why their shop has been closed for a while.

Vlisco celebrated the reopening of its flagship store and launched its new season collection at the Accra Mall, on Tuesday 11th April. The event was coupled with the 60th birthday celebration of one its loyal consumers Mrs. Winnifred Ampofo. Hosted by acclaimed media personality Anita Erskine, the simple but colourful event was very entertaining with exciting promotions which ensured the event was one to remember.

Speaking at the event, Marketing Manager of Vlisco Mr. Stephen Badu said the store was redesigned with its customers in mind and that Vlisco aims to provide its fashion savvy customers with more exciting fashion and a differentiated customer experience. He said, “Whenever you visit our newly renovated boutique, you will be pampered by ample choice, professional advice and styling tips from our staff. If you are a ‘Connoisseur of style’ and lover of authentic Wax Hollandais, come and enjoy the new and improved unique Vlisco retail experience.”

Adored by patrons for its colourful and vibrant fabrics, such as Wax Hollandais, Super-Wax and Java, Vlisco has over the years influenced and contributed to the growth of the fashion landscape in West & Central Africa. The refitted Vlisco boutique reveals a new environment concept where Vlisco aims to make the customer experience, and their journey towards their dream outfit, as pleasurable as possible. Vlisco connoisseurs will be thrilled to still find old favourites, new products as well as new services and promotions all under one roof. Guests at the reopening were treated to a fashion show with elegant outfits created by Stylista with new season fabric from Vlisco. Stylista showcased her talents by merging unique and bold colorful Vlisco fabrics.

How cute is Vlisco? As part of their 170th anniversary celebrations they have created a cool window display in their flagship store where customers can come and take photos. The window activation comes with a special promotion where participants who take a picture in the installation and post to social media with the hashtag #Vlisco170Years, stand a chance to win a Vlisco prize. This interactive feature will be in the store until December and everyone is welcome to participate. I will definitely be passing by one of these days!

Pass by their store in the Accra Mall asap, don’t slack!!

Here are some celebs and customers who have already participated in the fun!

The theme for this collaborative project with Vlisco&Co Côte d’Ivoire was constructed around showcasing a modern take on the traditional Ivorian bronze industry. Ivorian bronze sculptures and figurines have many elements of nature in them, and often speak of a tribe’s spirituality. In Ivory Coast, The Senufo and Akan tribe are the main tribes that use bronze for their ornaments. The Senufo are animinists, which is the belief that objects, places and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence. The Akan tribe, on the other hand, will create bronze gold weights depicting humans (warriors, medicine-men, hunters…), animals (birds, crocodiles, antelopes), flora (peanuts, oil palm flowers, calabashes), artefacts (drums, sandals, cannons) and numerous other figurative and geometric motifs. I based the patterns in my designs around these themes of nature, sometimes directly incorporating traditional motifs into them.
I decided to play with colour to give the patterns the modern twist the project needed, taking inspiration from Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami’s work which uses bright, pop art colours and busy patterns.
