seriously please give this anime some credit i’ve been working at getting it rep for 4 years now
just as a warning: this show is a prison drama, and it has triggering material. if you aren’t sure if you can watch, tell me your triggers and i’ll give you details on the scenes that you might want to avoid (or the specific times if needed)

Uchouten Kazoku / The Eccentric Family - One of my favourites!
Basically tanuki (and youkai in general) take on the shape of humans and don’t have as strict gender roles as humans so they just tend to present as whatever pleases them. The protagonist tanuki (in the gif)‘s mother (I say that as she ids as a woman from what I understand) also tends to present as male most of the time, and it’s seen as completely normal. Also, one of the tanuki lives full time as a frog (because it’s been so long he can’t transform back, but it’s okay) because that’s what he’s comfortable with.
The second season is coming out in a week’s time iirc. It’s a really heartwarming show, and I fully recommend it.

There are a few characters that I really like that I did not include (Rin-rin, Mei-mei, Panda Mama) because, to be honest, I was getting very tired of making it. Like I said, 8 hours.

I think I forgot to mention this in the powerpoint, but it is subbed. However, the voice acting is pretty slow (it sort of adds to the relaxed atmosphere of the show) so it’s pretty good for people who don’t do well with fast subs.
And I might’ve made a couple of typos, but bear with me, ok?
TYPO #1: Episode 44 was the sad one, not 43. Mistake on my part. Honestly, I guessed, and didn’t check.
TYPO #2: Not so much of a typo, but more like a really huge error. I REALLY wish I could’ve gone into more detail on a few more characters, but I really botched Sloth up. He lives in the cafe grounds, and doesn’t work at the zoo. However, given that I am a mondo lazypants, I just sort of pushed him into that slide because I felt like he was worth mentioning.

This drama is tragically and beautifully written. We rarely see the deglamorized reality of Mental Illness and the stigmas that come with it. I would highly suggest this drama to everyone! You don’t even have to be a drama fan to appreciate this amazingly well written story.
In some east Asian countries, mental illness carries even more of a stigma then it does in the UK and the US, which makes this film so much more important.
Ok I cried this drama needs so much more attention
The two male leads both suffer from mental illnesses
The male lead has very severe schizophrenia
He also has PTSD and can only sleep in his bathtub
His friend (the second male) has Tourette’s which is consistently portrayed
They DO NOT HOLD BACK on the ableist statements and remarks posed to the characters at all
Nearing the end of the drama the male lead completely loses his grasp on reality with a severe relapse
Neither character gets miraculously 100% cured (both are indicated to still take medication)
They make peace with their illnesses and it’s a happy ending
The drama’s writers were also recently given a plaque for their efforts in raising awareness for this, and it breaks the stereotype of the conventional ‘perfect family’ K-drama. Seriously, go watch this.
I feel genuine sorrow for anyone who is a fan of anime who hasn’t sat down to watch this brilliant piece of cinema. The animation is brilliant, the story is heart breaking, the characters are memorable and if you’re like me you will most probably cry at some point during the story or at least feel greatly moved by the plight of both robots and humans within the story.
so okay i just need to make a post about this new anime i started watching, Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru
it’s a magical girl anime, and one of the main characters is disabled
Togo was in an accident when she was little and hasn’t been able to move or feel her legs since. of course, i fucking lost my shit at a main character in an anime this season being disabled, but i was kind of curious and apprehensive about how they were going to handle her disability when she transforms.
see those ribbons? togo isn’t magically healed when she transformed, making her disability just something to make her unique when she’s a human. no, those ribbons are how she moves. her legs still don’t work, but the ribbons on her costume get her around and maneuver her so she can fight just as good as the other girls.
still so fucking weird to go from real life, where a cis man being flamboyant/effeminate/camp is judged like 70+% by how he speaks and carries himself, to online queer communities, which often seem to have no concept of male gender non-conformity that doesn’t involve wearing a skirt
i promise you, a man can be fem to the point of being in danger while wearing literally exactly the same thing as a hypermasculine guy. a boring basic black suit. a t shirt and jeans. a UNIFORM. gender conformity is not only about what you wear
None of you have watched that heartbreaking scene in The Birdcage where Albert gives up wearing everything he likes to try and blend in for their son’s conservative prospective in-laws and is so awkward and uncomfortable that no one says much until finally he says, defeated, “I know what you’re thinking - dressed like this, I’m even more obvious, aren’t I?” and it shows.
