October 14th 1994 - The Shawshank Redemption

Released in theaters the same day as Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption doesn’t have the spice, action, or sex appeal that Pulp Fiction has but it is arguably one of the greatest movies ever made.

It was nominated for seven Academy awards including best picture, but ultimately didn’t win any. No one was going to beat Tom Hanks and Forrest Gump that year. And if you did, you had to go through Pulp Fiction and Quiz Show. In other years Shawshank would have been a shoe in for Best Picture, and yet, Forrest Gump.

In 1998, Shawshank was not listed in AFI’s “100 Years…100 Movies” but when the list was revised in 2007 it came in at #72 outranking both Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction. That certainly came as some vindication.

“ “ I have to say that’s the most amazing story I ever heard. ”

The Shawshank Redemption ( 1994 )

Dir : Frank Darabont

I had the great pleasure of attending the 20th Aniversary Screening of The Shawshank Redemption in Los Angeles on Tuesday, with a group of representatives from the visitor’s bureau in Ohio. We met writer/director Frank Darabont, pictured here at center with a gift we presented to him. Also in attendance were Tim Robbins (Andy Dufresne), Morgan Freeman (Red), Gil Bellows (Tommy Williams), Clancy Brown (Captain Hadley), Mark Rolston (Bogs Diamond), David Proval (Snooze), Larry Brandenburg (Skeet), Neil Giuntoli (Jigger), Frank Medrano (Fat Ass, front row farthest to the right), Scott Mann (Glenn Quentin, directly to the left of Frank Darabont), Thomas Newman (the film’s music composer), and several other cast and crew members. I was able to snag a picture with Mr. Darabont, Mr. Bellows, and Mr. Brandenburg. I will post them soon. We were also treated to a panel discussion with Mr. Darabont, Mr. Robbins, and Mr. Freeman. It was truly a magical evening!

One of my lovely followers has reached out to me to ask all of you a question they hope you can answer. They want to know why Shawshank is so important to you. If a handful of you can shoot them an ask on their blog,  http://oneofmanyfandoms.tumblr.com/, and answer the question, we would appreciate it! You could help make their project better. Thanks guys, and get busy livin’!

This is pretty funny- a Shawshank quote as a 404 Error on IMDb.
