Gillian Anderson is the reason I first started listening to punk music.

The story of her dispute with the Fox network to receive equal pay as her costar, despite their reservations about her not being a “typical blonde bombshell”* and her sudden pregnancy, inspired me to always demand what I’m worth in my career.

Her award-winning performance in The House of Mirth quite literally scared me into getting a savings account. 

She got married twice, has had three children with two different men, runs countless charities, spends time with her fans, and refuses to be pigeonholed. This, and her choice of roles (feminist, strong, complicated, sexy) as well as her commitment to philanthropic work and her family, makes me think that if we try hard enough, we really can have it all.

I forgot about her for nearly twenty years, and now that I’m all growns up I’m proud to say that she is the only celeb that has lived up to all my misguided, confused, flannel-and-daisy-print wearing rebellious expectations. 

So here’s to my no 1. role model: thank you for Scully in 1994, thank you for Stella Gibson in 2014, and thank you for being a bright spark in a weird and fucked-up world.

But most of all, thanks for these amazing, ridiculous 90s fashion choices.

When most people enjoy sports, or hang around on astroturf-covered park spaces for the benefit of an undisclosed charity, they wear some sort of ill-fitting “athletic” apparel, along with sensible footwear that encourages agility, or at the very least, an approximation of stability. 

Not Gillian Anderson.

White platform mules, a mesh (?) sleeveless dress,white ball cap and, naturally, oval rose-tinted sunglasses are a killer choice for signing autographs and drinking frappucinos on a pleasant midsummer afternoon.

I must say I really appreciate when a person stays true to form in terms of their sartorial commitments. Really demonstrates something about their character.

Hey guys! 1996 here. I don’t know what you were doing at the exact moment this picture was being taken, but I know I was probably skipping out of Calculus, on my way to 7-11, listening to Weezer in my friend’s older brother’s Volvo. 

What I was not doing was chilling in a grey velour-upholstered limousine in a flirty plaid casual blazer and sensible business pumps looking like a cheerful, redheaded, oval-glasses-wearing BOSS.

The irony is that this looks suspiciously like Vancouver out the window there so who knows, maybe that’s us in the car.

I AM SO HAPPY THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN.

Right now, I am Gillian in this image. She is me. My job is the incarcerated alien freedom fighter with a Nokia strapped to his chest that is handcuffed to me.

I, however, am not wearing a custom pinstriped power suit with no top on underneath, so maybe that’s why I keep flipping all the tables in all the conference rooms.

I feel a little bit silly about posting this, because essentially, this whole blog is one big #tbt, but this photo is particularly significant because of that time Gillian worked as a unimpressed intern for a posh 90s art gallery, wearing a turtleneck and pinstriped business slacks.  

IMPORTANT BECAUSE

1) the golden patchwork fur overcoat in the first image is obscuring

2) the UTTER MAJESTY of this MESH AND ANGORA (?!) panelled turtleneck sweater-dress in the second image; and finally

3) In a sea of sameness, our girl stands the fuck out in the front row.

Oh my dear lord, readers. I’m so sorry I’ve been away so long. I’ve been so excited by the news of this possible X-Files reboot that I’ve just been hanging out, deliriously imagining all the potential wardrobe choices Gillian might wear to the premiere of such an endeavour. 

Here’s hoping it’s this one.

Are you guys in a holiday spirit yet? I’m sure trying. With all the merrymaking, I’m having difficulty matching my lace to my velvets, so I’ve decided to follow Gillian’s lead here and only wear one colour at once. 

Let’s all be sure to toast the return of the tiny sequinned novelty handbag.

It snowed again today, and then it rained, and basically it’s just feral outside, plus i’m having another tough week, so here is a picture of Gillian Anderson in a tight orange lycra crop top and a vaguely “ethnic” sarong strolling through the ocean and NOT GIVING A SINGLE FUCK.

I’m always looking over my shoulder too, honey. 

Particularly to make sure no one is going to try and snag my lower-back fancy dress butterfly (?) brooch. 

This is probably the best hair look we’ve seen in a while, too.

Proof that the Darkness Falls jacket is perfect for keeping warm during those chilly on-set side part adjustments.
