In honor of All-England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) 150th anniversary, IBM Watson created the 2018 Official Championship Poster (above). To make it, Watson was taught to recognize all the various photographic elements such as grass, crowds, court, etc. Then, Watson sifted through 150 years of archived Wimbledon photography – over 300,000 photos – and stitched the images together in the appropriate areas, based on color and content. The final photo mosaic is comprised of over 8,000 images, and, thanks to its pointillist quality, looks simultaneously modern and timeless. Beyond art-making, Watson’s visual recognition skills can help businesses in a broader sense, too, helping to classify wide categories of visual content.
FOX Sports has collaborated with IBM to create the Highlight Machine, a powerful platform that uses AI to archive and curate over 98,000 hours of video clips, game highlights and historical footage from soccer’s biggest tournament. Built with IBM Watson Media’s AI video technology and IBM iX’s user experience expertise, the platform is designed so that soccer fans don’t miss a single play, penalty kick, or goal. Fans can browse the massive archive and build their own personalized highlight reels, sorting and saving clips by year, team, player, match, and play type. And thanks to the processing power of Watson, the clips are available just seconds after the action ends in the match. It’s another way for fans all over the world to enjoy the Beautiful Game.
The first boards for gliding over snow existed as early as 1900, but it was not until 1963 that American surfers brought the feeling of surfing to the snow and developed the original snowboard—the so-called snurfer. A few years later, the snowboard drew the interest of the winter sports industry, and since 1998, snowboarding has been recognized as an Olympic sport.
Chemnitz University of Technology researchers have presented an innovation from the 2020/2021 winter sports season: Together with silbaerg GmbH, a spin-off from the Institute of Lightweight Structures at Chemnitz University of Technology, they have developed a lightweight snowboard that can also be manufactured far more sustainably than comparable boards. This is made possible by a new type of textile fiber, a semi-finished product made of carbon fibers. By using the dry fiber placement process, fiber waste in snowboard production can be reduced by around 60%. “This not only saves costs, but thanks to the board’s sustainable production, its carbon footprint is also significantly reduced,” says Prof. Dr. Holger Cebulla, head of the Chair of Textile Technologies.

Yeah I was never given a dog as a kid either, and neither did a lot of kids I knew. A dog is very much not a thing that every kid has.
Most kids also don’t sacrifice their entire childhood and long-term health to get a shiny piece of metal for their parents.
Okay but for the ones who do it is common for parents to gift awards for achievements.
The achievements should not be “break your body and soul to beat one of the hardest competition known to Man to appease your parents’ vanity”
Right, it’s more along of the lines of “Acomplish your ambitions, and we’ll get you a treat for your success.”
“Accomplish OUR ambitions and we’ll reward you with things other kids get for free”
Again, a lot of kids don’t get a free dog. It would actually be rather irresponsible to force the care of an animal onto a child with nothing to show for it.

Professional Olympic athletes, ESPECIALLY gymnasts and figure skaters start their career at around 4-5 years old
Older than that and you’re considered to have missed your chance
These kids have NO agency, they have NOT chosen this life and this is all done to satiate their parents’ vanity and ambitions
They’ve been robbed of their childhood, they didn’t get any socialization skills, they’re likely to break their bodies and become crippled by the time they reach 25.
So when they desire something as simple as a DOG, a companion, something to aid in their socialization, you gatekeep it behind one of the hardest acheivements in human history.
Do you NOW see how insane that is?
These are human athletes, who often have human teammates, human coaches, and human competitors. There’s a whole community all right there, I’m not sure where you’re getting this bizarre idea from that they’re deprived of socialization like theyre locked up in a basement growing up or some shit.

I…, there are coaches and teammates, but you get no free time. You’re still expected to go to school and do your homework. Your life is heavily regimented and every second of your day is planned in advance by your parents and coaches.

There’s literally been a massive scandal regarding this a couple of weeks ago.
If you list off the type of life long control an Olympian experiences without the context, I’m sure most people would agree it’s abusive.
Oh but it’s for sports so it’s okay.
i dont think the dog is actually important, whats important is that kids shouldnt be competing in the olympics at all. like dasha said, they begin at such a young age it pretty much CAN’T be their own choice.
