Three dog skulls from ‘Secrets of Bones’ hosted by Ben Garrod. The first image shows a regular dog skull; this contains both collagen, an organic compound, and calcium phosphate, a mineral compound.

In the images with the red gloves, another skull has been left in an oven for a few days. This has taken out all of the organic compounds, leaving just the mineral compounds. As you can see, this bone is too brittle to be of structural use.

In the images with the blue gloves, a skull has been soaked in formic acid for over a month. This removed the calcium phosphate from the bone but leaves the collagen. The surprising result is a very flexible skull.

Whaaaat. That is awesome.

If you haven’t seen ‘Secrets of Bones’ I’d highly recommend it. Here are links to the episodes on YouTube:

Hello vulture community!

Recently, I have been cleaning skulls for some friends and I am having a difficult time figuring out the best way to degrease this skull:

The nose area has quite a bit of grease on the bone and I’m not sure what the best method would be to remove it. The rest of the skull is fine, it’s just that one stubborn spot.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to remove the grease I would be very appreciative! Thank you!!

Spent all summer cleaning this deer skull, there are still blobs of stubborn grease but I don’t have a set up that’ll work through the cold temps, so we’ll have to wait to address those. Regardless, all the teeth stayed, and I’m really happy with that!

Halloween and Valentine’s Day seem like parallel opposite holidays (both involve candy and fear), and since I’ve been high-key obsessed with Wooden Overcoats, here’s a box of Antigone’s Memento Mori chocolates from season 2, episode 4, “The Sweet, Sweet Taste of Death.”

Here is a better look of the final art for my shirt design. I “inked” the back graphic in PS and the pocket graphic in procreate. The font is Soggy Bottoms by @kernclub.otf. Scroll through to see the original sketches from my thumbnail book. This took a little time, but I’m happy with how the design evolve but remained true to the sketches. #art #illustration #keitruck #kernclub #skulls #horns #drawing #process #sketchbook #oakland #toomanycats #feralcatsofinstagram #catlife #procreate #photoshopart #worktruck #japantruck #digitalart (at Oakland, California)
