Have you read Edward Abbey’s master thesis about Anarchism and the Morality of Violence? Abbey examines some of the founding philosophies of anarchism and poses the question of whether violence is ever moral in an anarchistic context. Spoiler: it isnt.
Nancy Liang is a Sydney based illustrator and artist who explores whimsy and magic in mundane and other moments. She focuses on landscapes, city streets and suburban locales of which she attempts to draw out social, cultural and even personal narratives. Using her interest in dioramas her illustrations take shape through textures and colours from papers, found objects and other miscellaneous materials. She is most active making Gifs and now dabbling in Processing. Outside the practice, Nancy is an art teacher at the International Art Centre based in Carlingford.
American artist Ali Cavanaugh was born in St Louis, 1974. Her attention to visual world started when she was 15 months old, after she lost much of her hearing. She learned to depend on body language and lip-reading at very early age. You can easily see her sensitivity to gestures and postures of people around her by looking at her works. She creates her own technique by painting with watercolor on panels made of kaolin clay. She uses her little daughter as her model at her latest works.
For Pride month, I just want everyone to see this amazing new series at Netflix! Writing a review about it (in Swedish unfortunately) and it’s just SO GOOD, I mean; Ellen page and Laura Kinney plus intersectionality, transvisibility and hbqti+-issues! And did I mention it was funny too? Yeah, it’s a keeper! Recommend, recommend.
In a Western-style mansion on a cliff lives the aristocratic, faceless Shadow family. They live together with lifelike doll attendants who serve as their faces. One such living doll, Emilico, aids her master Kate as they learn more about themselves and the mysteries of the house.
A mystery! I love mysteries! With its intriguing premise and and somewhat gothic visuals, I was excited to pick this up.
It’s intriguing from the get-go: Emilico is a “living doll,” because as a member of the Shadows family, her mistress Kate has no face. All Shadows must have a face, a living doll who is practiced and in-tune so as to visually reflect all their master’s emotions when interacting with anyone else.
Living dolls and their Shadows must learn to be in sync with each other; at the same time, when she’s not in her mistress’s rooms learning or cleaning, Emilico and the other living dolls are on cleaning duty for the rest of the giant house. See, the Shadows aren’t just featureless black bodies: they produce soot like humans produce carbon dioxide. And the soot, if left to accumulate, can congregate into “scorches,” or little soot monsters. So cleaning of both the house as a whole, and the Shadows’ individual rooms, is paramount.
Kate doesn’t know much more than Emilico; both of them are learning about the Shadows’ house as the series goes on, particularly when they have to prove how well-suited they are for being paired together. I enjoyed Kate as a character: she’s prone to feeling blue, but is sharp and cares. I was curious about why she didn’t seem to know much about the house or family more than Emilico, given that they appear to be somewhere between the ages of 10 and 14. But as the series goes on, explanations do come about.
And that’s good, because you need answers, you need some payoff to the central question of the series: what’s up with the Shadows Family?
I hate when shows don’t answer the obvious questions, or try to be mysterious without giving the audience answers as a reward for their engagement. And happily, that doesn’t happen here: we do get a solid explanation by the end of the series, and we get it in ways that explain a lot about what we’ve already seen, or which the viewer may have already connected some dots.
Verdict
English dub?Yes
Visuals: Fine, and thankfully there are plenty of bright colors and lights, making it easy to watch and not super dark (-toned), despite the abundance of soot, literal shadows, and overcast days lending atmosphere to the setting.
Worth watching? Yes. It’s a good show, and a second season will start airing in July (2022), which promises to continue the story of Emilico, Kate and company with more questions and more answers. This initial season gives you some answers, then introduces more mysteries so you’ll want to come back for the second.

A/N: Boy I am back and I hit the deep end. This took me days to write and finish. I hope people enjoy it as much as I did and still do.

Beginning: A Villain was born
in the beginning you never intended nor thought you would ever go down such a path
you were right around the corner to turning 20 when you found out about your magical powers you never knew you’d possessed let alone anyone else in your family
starting with no experience or handbook named ‘Magic 101’ or ‘Magic for Dummies’ it was hard keeping them in check as they would randomly activate with gestures, words or things you did like sneezing or coughing, it was a true torture getting it somewhat under control
due to the lack of control, guidance and training, you were bound to cause accidents sooner or later and in a city such as Gotham who this would be a day to day basis, you would easily get branded with the mark of a villain
but the one day that scenario happened came sooner than you thought it would
it was also the day you found out that your powers were triggered by intense floods of emotions as well…
you were spending a fun afternoon with one of your friend in the mall, chatting, shopping and grabbing food when a group of guys approached you
they roped the two of you into a conversation about a store you just left, saying they never went in there before and just wanted to know if it was worth checking out
being the friendly persons your friend and you were you immediately started telling the guys how amazing the shop was and what kind of stuff they had
not realizing the true intention the man had they took advantage of your naivety and helpfulness
and suddenly everything happened in the bat of an eye
the guys cornered you into a wall, saying nasty things about you and your bodies and suddenly everything and everyone around you was on fire
your flight instinct kicked in and you sprinted through the flames, the screams of pain and agony echoing after you as the flames left you untouched
left and right of you were people on fire burning alive, adults, elderly and children alike, their skin melting of their bodies and the smell of burning flesh and hair becoming unbearable
after that, the accident the media claimed was an attack of a terrorist group, was soon changed by one of the survivors who claimed otherwise
he was one of the guys that cornered you, apparently he made it to a fountain that was inside the mall to extinguish the flames, his burns severe but not as strong as those of the corpses and few other survivors
he claimed it was a woman who did it, her eyes suddenly glowing red and everything catching fire because of her, after that the woman was called the Warlock by the media, a devil, the newest monster of Gotham
telling stories about you, that you did it on purpose and that you would surely do it again
you were called that, everything they claimed was about you and if they wanted to make a villain out of you for a little accident, you would play the part
you trained hours, days, weeks, months until you had your powers under control before you started to give the city a piece of your mind
you never harmed anyone, never used it on other until they attacked first, you just simply had fun in being an asshole to the city who branded you as a devil, a monster, as the Warlock
they made you into it and now they had to endure you
but it still felt wrong deep inside of you, and how would you get out of it when you were already this far into it, spending years to fulfil this roles
you played their villain for two years until a vigilante under the name of Batman appeared, locking criminals and villains away left and right
a door seemed to appear right in front of you and your scheming phase begin
you would engage in fights with him from time to time when you would “accidently” cross paths at night
those fights would turn more extreme from every occurance to the next until you set the main square on fire, like you did almost three years ago in the mall, but this time with full intention, and you as the only victim
of course it wasn’t really you that burned on the square that night, it was a body you stole from the morgue, without a name or family to take claim of
you watched from a roof in the distance, satisfied beyond expectation, a small smile gracing you lips
‘a glorious exit from this chapter of my life’
you were ready to climb off the roof and disappear from this life when you stopped dead in your tracks after hearing a deep voice behind you
“Where do you think you are going, Warlock?” You winced at the name. Even after almost three years you still hated that name. Slowly you turned to see Batman, the dark knight himself only a few feet away from you. He was barely visible with the dark night sky behind him but the street lights below made it easier to make out his silhouette. “Leaving my villainous ways behind to start new?” You questioned back but it sounded more like a statement. He stepped closer and you started to make out more of his face, well what wasn’t covered by his mask. He was massive, built like a dark brick wall and towering over you. You would be lying if you’d say you weren’t afraid and a little turned on by it. His head tilted slightly to the left. Curiosity. “Why the sudden change of heart?” You huffed. “Oh please, it wasn’t hard or sudden. I was planning this for a while. Besides that, I always had doubts about this whole villain thing. You know it’s fun being an asshole from time to time, especially after this city branded me as their villain when I didn’t have control over my powers. Calling me awful things which I had to see every day in the news or while walking down the streets, coming by the newspaper stands. It hurted, but I am done with being hurt and I am done being the monster they made me.” You took off your mask and flung it across the roof at Batman which hit his chest before he caught it with his hand. His head straightened and something in his eyes changed. “Should I for god knows what reason start again, arrest me. You know how I look.” And with that you jumped off the roof, leaving behind a baffled Batman who clutched your mask tightly in his hand.

Jang Bong-Hwan was a cocky and arrogant ladies man. Top chef in The Blue House (Korean equivalent to The White House), one day he was framed for screwing up and intentionally injuring a Chinese ambassador. Disgraced and now unhireable, it seems like Bong-Hwan’s life can’t get any worse…
And then the police come for him. In trying to escape the cops, Bong-Hwan accidentally falls off his balcony and into the apartment pool many, many stories below.
Which is where he sees the figure of a woman in the endless black water before him.
The next thing Jang Bong-Hwan knows, he’s waking up in Joseon Korea, which is the easy part for him to process. The hard part… well… he woke up in the body of that woman he saw in the pool. Queen Cheorin.
Everyone in the palace believes Queen Cheorin attempted to kill herself, so the lake has been drained, with orders to not refill it. Bong-Hwan will have to learn to acclamate to the Joseon period, survive the intrigue of the palace, and seduce the king enough to get the lake refilled but not enough to make him want sex. Ideally Bong-Hwan can get through this without that at least. Though if any of the king’s concubines- or any of the cute court ladies- want a taste of the Queen, he’s more than happy to oblige!
Shouldn’t be too hard. After all, history records the King, Cheoljong, as a weak little puppet for his ministers. One of many Joseon regal failures that will weaken the defenses of the country and usher in the Japanese invasion.
Except, Bong-Hwan discovers, that isn’t the case at all. King Cheoljong knows he’s a puppet, and he plays his role well in order to flush out the Japanese spies within his empire and hopefully strengthen the Joseon dynasty.
As Bong-Hwan adapts to the role of Queen of Joseon, he will fight to keep the king alive long enough to save his country, fall in love with the King despite himself (or be “infected by the feelings of the host body”, as he puts it), teach the palace ladies how to twerk, and invent the Big Mac & french fries a century early.
But Bong-Hwan’s strength depends on his connection to his body back in 2021. A body laying in a coma.
And the men who framed Bong-Hwan and destroyed his life in this timeline have decided it’s best if the chef never wakes up again.
** I’m not saying this show is good. I’m saying it’s worth watching.
According to dark legend and tavern rumors, 120 years ago the Crown Prince Jonghyun- who had secretly published books under the name ‘The Lustful Student’- wrote a story very different than his usual erotic adventures.
This story was no bedroom novel, but one of supernatural political intrigue. A story of an ancient and powerful vampire named Gwi who controlled the King of Joseon-Korea as a puppet. Whose dark power wound through every level of government.
Except it wasn’t a legend, as Kim Sung-Yeol knows all too well. Once a respected scholar (and close friend to Crown Prince Jonghyun), Sung-Yeol ran afowl of the monstrous Gwi. As part of the vampire’s sick, twisted game Sung-Yeol’s beloved fiance was mortally wounded, he himself was turned into a vampire, and Sung-Yeol was forced to drink his lover’s blood in order to try and save the empire.
But he failed. And the Crown Prince was brutally executed as a traitor.
For 120 years, Sung-Yeol has walked the earth as a vampire hunter, and thus is gifted the ability to walk in the daylight. Gwi has continued to control the government of Joseon-Korea, and ‘The Lustful Student’ became nothing more than a shadow of a rumor.
Until the books began appearing again, republished from an unknown cache of manuscripts.
The Crown Prince’s final novel, the story of vampires, was destroyed by Gwi. The story goes that the Crown Prince found a way to destroy Gwi once and for all, and coded into his manuscript the means through which Gwi’s destruction could be brought about.
No matter that Gwi has slaughtered anyone who he even suspects of having the lost manuscript, Kim Sung-Yeol believes it is still out there, and is his key to destroying Gwi once and for all.
As Sung-Yeol turns up the heat on his hunt for Gwi, he will partner with the bright and optimistic Seo Jin- a young woman pretending to be a male book dealer. Seo Jin can get her hands on any book that has ever existed, and she is particularly knowledgeable about ‘The Lustful Student’.
With Seo Jin by his side, Sung-Yeol stands a chance to defeat Gwi once and for all… if he can find the last copy of Prince Jonghyun’s vampire novel.
But another player is working in the shadows- the modern Crown Prince Lee Yoon, who will not become another puppet king, and whose father was slaughtered at Gwi’s order.

A friend of mine has a novel coming out the US in 2 weeks (and in the UK in July). It made me cry numerous times, often like proper sobbing crying, and is so beautifully written, philosophical and affirming.
Not the whumpiest recommendation in the world, but it has a lot of emotional pain, spiritual crisis, and moderate knife violence. You should read it!
