Catherine Morland’s coming-of-age story was one of my first 18th century novels, so I was bound to like it. Being introduced to a completely new way of life in Bath, she eventually finds herself caught up in many new, in a few cases annoying situations. Introduced to a handsome, young man named Henry Tilney, Catherine finds herself quickly in love – but doesn’t see him again for some time. Isabella Thorpe, the daughter of Mrs. Allen’s (who Catherine is staying with) old acquaintance, quickly becomes close with Catherine and when introduced, also falls for her brother James. They later get engaged but Isabella then falls for Frederick Tilney, the engagement is cancelled and Catherine is caught in the middle! She then became the centre of her own romance – John Thorpe, Isabella’s brother, falls for Catherine – but she, befriending Eleanor Tilney, gets closer to Henry. She is invited to the Tilney’s home, Northanger Abbey – heavily influenced by gothic novels she finds herself creating the mystery that General Tilney, Henry’s father, killed his wife some years before. Henry catches her snooping around and unfortunately, although everything seems to right itself, while he is away Eleanor informs Catherine she has to leave Northanger on the wishes of the General. Back at home she is in quite a dull mood, but one day Henry turns up and explains all is a mistake and proposes to her!

I shan’t ruin the ending and I’ve left out as much detail as I can but my! It’s worth the read! ^~^
