We soon found that customers did not respect our arguments of public health, considering others, or the mandates. We switched to telling them “this is private property” and I’m sorry to say that was way more effective than “please, people with cancer pick up their medications here”

This country is a failed state built on childish selfishness.

Gonna get that tattooed on my ass

Despite claims to the contrary, for the sake of the economy, the plague is not over!

This is especially true in areas where vaccination rates are low due to either lack of access or the anti-vaxers. Additionally, because of the variants that have been emerging, some of which are extra contagious, we might be seeing this plague sticking around for quite awhile.

disabled people deserve to survive the pandemic also

Disabled people not only deserve to survive, they deserve fucking compensation for all the times they heard how there’s no need to worry because only people like them will die

The Pandemic definitely moved some of my “friends” into a different category for me. And yes, the “pfft, it doesn’t matter - it’s only those with underlying conditions who’ll die” and the “it’s, like, the Earth cleansing itself…” people are all in the same category of “would definitely throw disabled people under the bus/ stand on their corpses for a better chance at a handout from the establishment”.

And ableds wonder aloud why so many of us are “angry all the time”.

chavisory:

Okay, look.

I know that the party line right now is “the vaccines don’t keep you from getting COVID, they keep you from getting seriously sick or dying.”

And yes, I’m in favor of not getting seriously sick or dying. I’d take a vaccine just for that. Like I get the flu vaccine every year even though some years it’s had an efficacy rate of like 10%. I’ll take a free 10% reduced chance of getting the flu.

But if there is anyone, anyone at all, reading this who hasn’t gotten vaccinated, for whom “well, it won’t keep me from getting it, so what’s the point” is playing any role in your decision-making…

I want you to know that the vaccines still stand a moderate chance of helping to prevent you from getting it.

The mRNA vaccines show a significantly reduced efficacy against the omicron variant, on top of diminishing efficacy a few weeks to a few months after vaccination.

That efficacy still is not zero. It is not.

Signed someone who spent a week living in a 600 sq. ft. apartment with an infected roommate and didn’t catch it.

We tried to keep the windows cracked before the temperatures outside got way too cold, but we couldn’t avoid sharing a bathroom and kitchen or walking the same hallway, and I never caught it.

I know that right now we’re supposed to somehow simultaneously believe that we’re not supposed to just be resigned to catching it, but also that being vaccinated won’t prevent us from catching it, and that feels impossible. Because it is impossible.

But getting vaccinated can still help keep you from catching it.

Hey Americans, USPS is sending out one (1) package of four (4) free COVID test kits per residential address, you can sign up here: https://special.usps.com/testkits?s=09

Obviously Joseph Robinette thinks everyone lives in single-family homes in nuclear family units & if you are one of the many people whose communal living arrangement looks like “a regular house rented as separate units but not zoned as apartments” or “an illegal basement” or one of the other myriad ways landlords artfully dodge property taxes / avoid dotting the i’s & crossing the t’s of municipal bureaucracy, good luck & godspeed. Please pass this on!

Also fucks over households with multiple generations or several children, but still get your free tests if you can.

They’re apparently working on the apartment building/multiple units at the same street address/PO Box not registering as a residential address thing. Don’t give up.

If you’re a dramatic (gay) arts person and the pandemic has ruined your potential for cinematic angst, consider doing what I’ve been doing since I was 16 and edgy and looking at The Unsent Project.

Sooo I rarely post anything not related to my blog, but I’m taking a research class at my university this semester and my group and I are researching how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the mental health of college students ages 18-24! We are looking for around 50 more participants. If you fit the criteria and have about 10 minutes to spare I would be so appreciative if you would consider taking our survey! Thank you all so much

Just Small Genetic Tweaks To Chinese Bird Flu Virus Could Fuel A Human Pandemic

by Nell Greenfieldboyce / NPR Health

A study published Thursday shows how a bird flu virus that’s sickening and killing people in China could mutate to potentially become more contagious.

Just three changes could be enough to do the trick, scientists report in the journal PLOS Pathogens.

And the news comes just as federal officials are getting ready to lift a moratorium on controversial lab experiments that would deliberately create flu viruses with mutations like these.

Public health officials have been worried about this bird flu virus, called H7N9, because it’s known to have infected more than 1,500 people — and killed 40 percent of them. So far, unlike other strains that more commonly infect humans, this deadly virus does not spread easily between people.

The fear is that if it mutates in a way that lets it spread more easily, the virus will sweep around the globe and take a heavy toll, because people’s immune systems haven’t ever been exposed to this type of flu before. Past pandemics caused by novel flu viruses jumping from animals or birds into people have killed millions.
