Another street ender and another Budapest build in the early 1900s. This time it’s the neoclassical St Stephen’s Basilica. We were lucky enough to stay half a block north of this cathedral.

21st century Italian Klismos chair in Empire (early 19th century) style
A large scale Italian neoclassical chair finely crafted in ebony and pau marfim veneers. Extraordinary details include a frieze of seven classical figures with floral and foliage detailing. Chair is upholstered in black leather with a loose down feather seat cushion.

Designed by architect Pietro Ghinelli in 1834. Built in neoclassical style with 24 doric style columns which compose an arcade. The whole structure is made of bricks. Until a few years ago, the buying and selling of fish took place under the portico on a daily basis. In the central square still today, in the morning, the itinerant merchants of fruit and vegetables carry out their activity.

In 1936 Robsjohn-Gibbings recreated an ancient Greek mosaic for the floor of his Madison Avenue showroom. His iconic klismos chair, now reproduced by Sedaris, was faithfully modeled after examples from antiquity, such as found on a c400 BC stela (second photo).
