Wait I’m not done with Turning Red, still on my bullshit.

This particular critic, THIS ONE HERE

Has the AUDACITY TO-

*sigh*

Do you know, when I got my first? When I was NINE. Crying sobbing mess on the toilet freaking out because something was wrong with my body I wasn’t prepared for, I thought I was DYING. And did my parents give me the talk? No. Never. Not the period talk, not the sex talk, nothing that had to do with reproductive organs, EVER. Just handed me a comically surplus sized box of pads and told me to figure it out.

When you live in a society where parents refuse to acknowledge things like where babies come from, and you have scholar adults taking science books away from kids because their friends won’t stop giggling at the diagrams of private parts (I’m still salty about that, that was my Christmas gift you *ssholes) a film like Turning Red kicks down doors and makes you face something that shouldn’t still be considered “age sensitive” in this year of the Lord 2022, my god

I knew the basics before I got it, but I had no clue…

* The blood wouldn’t necessarily be red. When I first got my period, I spent a few min looking at my underwear wondering how I shit myself. I didn’t know the blood could look brown, or be thick.

* That tampons weren’t a good idea yet. I was 10 or 11 when I got my first period and physically smaller than an adult woman. My first attempt at inserting a tampon was very painful and unsuccessful. I wouldn’t use them until I was around 14 or so.

* That when you use pads the blood can get on your bottom and I’d have to occasionally clean off the toilet seat after using it.

* That getting your first period DOES NOT mean you’re fully developed and fully able to bear children. I could have technically gotten pregnant at that age, but I was still a child and pregnancy would have put my life in danger because I was still physically immature.

* That it wouldn’t be regular for another few years.

* That very painful cramping is NOT NORMAL once you reach your 20s and is cause for concern.

* That the blood and tissue you pass can look chunky or stringy and not like blood from a cut.

* That stress can halt your period for months BUT

* That doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant

Feel free to add your own

Relatable

-passing blood clots is completely normal

-that your period may straight up skip a month when you first get it

-and then it’ll happen twice in the same month

-getting your period does NOT automatically make you a woman

Painful cramping isn’t normal in your 20’s? That’s a little concerning, mine have been getting exponentially worse

It is NOT normal.

I can 100% guarantee you have endometriosis, PCOS, or another hormone problem. If your doctor says it’s normal, DEMAND a second opinion.

Thinking that it’s normal is how people end up infertile or dead. It’s why so many women under 40 these days are having an almost impossible time either conceiving or preventing conception. Because no one teaches anyone that it’s the sign of trouble that can very seriously hurt you.

Anyone who has severe cramps, heavy bleeding, or irregular periods after about 19 years old should seek medical advice. None of those are normal.

If you have skin tags, a hard time losing weight, migraines related to your period, depression that is amplified when menstruating, severe mood swings, sleep disturbances that get worse with menstruation, or any other significant health problem that started with puberty and is worse when hormones are fluctuating you need to be checked.

None of the things that people relate to women on their periods is actually an example of a healthy woman. It’s an example of people who need one form of treatment or another.

Do NOT go to a general doctor. Find a women’s health center. Obgyn doctors. ASK SPECIFICALLY FOR A FEMALE DOCTOR. (Also helps with creating a demand for female doctors, win-win)

And if the doctor you do see tried to write you off as “nothing” or “its normal”? Politely insist for another doctor. People forget: you are paying them for a service. If you believe the doctor is not taking you or your problems seriously, ASK FOR ANOTHER DOCTOR. Specifically, “Do you have another doctor on staff who is more experienced with female health”. It is WELL within your right to change doctors as you see fit - you owe no loyalty to one specific doctor if they aren’t meeting your needs.

Reblogging for all my followers with vaginas. I have so many sisters and friends with vaginas and I didn’t know most of this. I turn 30 soon. You’d think I’d have pick up these bits of information over the years in conversation.

Hey!! Hey everybody with periods!!! If you have a period you should read this, because it’s helpful, and people with periods really aren’t taught enough about their own bodies.

even if u personally don’t get a period, someone u know/care abt prob does & u should pass this along

women’s health is health & we should all know these things, i feel

@thekingofchungus!

Also related, while cyclic headaches are fairly normal, cyclic migraines are not. My migraines were dismissed by male doctors for decades. They never gave me any medicine to help with them despite migraines causing me to miss up to 1 week of work every month.

The first time my husband got a migraine (one on a day he ran 26 miles), the doctor sent him to get blood work & a MRI. Before the results were back, the doctor gave him prescriptions for medicines that were for migraine prevention & extreme pain & nausea.

Find another doctor if migraine complaints are dismissed as “normal for women”.

This is good info and for everyone that needs to know more

Words and art by Nikki Tajiri @nikkitajiri on Tumblr and Instagram

Just read this at a women’s group gathering. I always find it so powerful when women gather and share stories.

Update: December 2020

Hi Tumblr! I have embarked on a new project, and it is a book about periods for kiddos. It is pretty straightforward and doesn’t really wax poetic about periods, it follows a little girl named June who asks her mom questions about her period. I’m excited about it, although it has been hard to find time to work on it. Release date will be sometime in 2021.

And if you were thinking, awww man I was thinking of creating a kid’s book on periods - please continue to do so. There are thousands of books about Santa and the Tooth Fairy, so why would we need any less about periods? We need many many books about this topic told from diverse perspectives.

Above artwork is my own, watercolor.

Love and periods, Nikki

“1. Buy this divine book of poetry.

2. Read it.

3. WEEP

@nikkitajiri I read your beautiful poems last night, by a fire, under the new moon and stars. Your words floored me and so eloquently captured thoughts and feelings I didn’t even know I had.

I didn’t know how much I needed this book. My only regret was that I finished it too quickly, but I plan to read it with every new moon and every period I have.

Thank you for writing this. It is important.”

Hi beauties!

My soul sister and friend IRL Jenna Longoria (aka the Period Guru) is hosting a Masterclass for Period Solutions.

If you have painful periods or have been diagnosed with a period-related condition like endometriosis or PCOS, I highly recommend that you start following Jenna (@jennalongoriahealth on Instagram) and take this Master Class.

I have personally been working with her over the last 4 months with some of my hormone imbalances, and her awareness of all things hormones is unparalleled. I believe hormone health is something that is not well-understood or supported by standard medical practice, and much of the suffering is quite unnecessary. Jenna’s website is linked below.

Hope you are all in good spirits and undeterred by this current climate. Xoxo Nikki

[So excited to share that Dr Christiane Northrup, a well-known women’s wellness author, shared my book on her Instagram! I greatly admire her, and especially love her book Dodging Energy Vampires. So cool! I sent her the book one year ago, so I was surprised to see her post about it now. Amazing ❤️]

“Through sustained attention and thus acceptance, there comes transmutation. The pain-body becomes transformed into radiant consciousness, just as a piece of wood, when placed in or near a fire, itself is transformed into fire.

Menstruation will then become not only a joyful and fulfilling expression of your womanhood but also a sacred time of transmutation, when you give birth to new consciousness. Your true nature then shines forth, both in its female aspect as the Goddess and in its transcendental aspect as the divine Being that you are beyond male and female duality.”

- Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

I’ve cut my menstrual cup’s ring! And it feels much better now ;) I’ve had an continuous feel of it poking me and it was irritating my vagina, now I can’t feel it at all ;)

I wanted to wait with cutting the stim utill I get comfortable with inserting and pulling out my cup. I adapted to this quickly ;)

I’m also considering buying a bit smaller cup, but for now this one is okay.

Check out my previous post about menstrual cups;)

Greetings!

If you follow me and read my post since last year you may know that I obtained a menstrual cup some time ago. The truth is I haven’t got an occasion to try it… until now, thanks to quarantine.

I needed some time to prepare the cup and of course also prepare myself for trying it. Living in a dormitory was an obstacle for me to do it, so when I started bleeding on quarantine at home I though it was a appropriate day to insert my menstrual cup.

Quick backstory: I got my first period when I was turning 10, so according to my calculations I have used about 3360 menstrual pads till today (for almost 10 years). So continuing counting I will use at least 10080 more until I stop menstruating.

Tampons, pads and panty liners along with their packaging and individual wrapping generate more than 200,000 tonnes of waste per year, and they all contain plastic – in fact, pads are around 90% plastic!” - OrganiCup

One pad decompose in about 500 to 800 years! And burning them causes highly toxic emissions. So please consider switching to more sustainable menstrual products as:

My first period with menstrual cup:

image

Day 1 | Although I tried doing this before, it didn’t work out then. “Take your time” - I said to myself and began putting in right place. The first day of wearing a cup wasn’t the most comfortable and I wore a pad due to the insurance. I found very little blood inside the cup in the evening, which surprised me.

Articles and videos that helped me at the first day:

Also what I found helpful was medical lubricant, but to be honest I used it only at the first day. I didn’t mention it before but if you want to know, my cup is from the brand calledPerfect Cup;)

image

Day 2 | I felt really comfortable after wearing a cup at night. Also I didn’t notice any leakage. Although I think the ring was irritating me sometimes.

Day 3 | Again I felt very comfortable all day. I think the cup’s size is appropriate for me.

(sanitizing my cup in hot water while taking shower)

Day 4 | My bottom stomach hurt a bit, I think I put my cup a little too deep. But I reinserted it and then it was okay. In the evening I noticed that the amount of blood inside the cup was low so I decided to take a break of it and try on a cloth pad I sew before.

image

Day 5 | I stopped bleeding and after wearing a cloth pad for a night I felt a lot more pleased then after using a disposable pad.

Summing up: I loved it from the very first day! The feeling of not having a blood flood inside my pants and having any skin irritation caused by the chemicals inside the disposable pads… Absolutely stunning! Now I feel like: everyone who is menstruating should try that!

Also I have a story here: when I got my cup, I showed it to my boyfriend and he loved it and started playing with it, but when I showed it to my (women) roommates they were like “yuuuck!” and the situation was really shocking for me, because before I hadn’t met anyone who would react that way on a cup…

I’ve also asked some other people what they think about menstrual cups.

  • “They are problematic and embarrassing in public toilets.”
  • “I’m afraid I can stain something while putting it out.”
  • “They are cool. Someday I’ll buy one!”
  • “At least you don’t waste money on tampons and pads.”
  • “I think it is a good way to reduce your waste.”
  • “They seem to be more comfortable than tampons.”
  • “In my point of view they aren’t made for me, but I’m not sure, because it seems to be better and more comfortable solution.”

And what is your opinion about menstrual cups?

I will finish with mentioning that there is nothing to be ashamed with talking about your period or using a menstrual cup! Love your body and accept everything about it! You are beautiful and worthy! ♥ ♥ ♥
