This fall, the Jewish Museum presents a rare opportunity to explore a little-known chapter in the Russian avant-garde. Opening on September 14, Chagall, Lissitzky, Malevich: The Russian Avant-Garde in Vitebsk, 1918-1922features some 120 works of three iconic figures—Marc Chagall, El Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich—as well as works by students and teachers of the Vitebsk school—100 years after the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Chagall, Lissitzky, Malevich: The Russian Avant-Garde in Vitebsk, 1918-1922, opens today at the Jewish Museum. This exhibition of some 160 works presents the artistic output of three iconic figures–Marc Chagall, El Lissitzky, Kazimir Malevich–as well as works by students and teachers of the People’s Art School 100 years after its founding following the Russian Revolution of 1917. Discover how Vitebsk–a small city with a significant Jewish population–became an incubator of avant-garde art during a time of radical transformation.

Ursula is a young artist who lives in a cottage, deep in the forest. Kiki meets her when she accidentally drops the package she’s been delivering. Ursula values her art and her independence and lives her life according to that. Her cottage is very simple, and it is obviously used mainly as a working space rather than for other domestic activities. Although she likes to live alone, Ursula doesn’t seem a loner - she has an open and warm temperament and she likes Kiki’s company. She represents a role model/sister figure to Kiki whom she helps when the latter is struggling with her seemingly lost ability to fly. Ursula’s art is heavily influenced by Marc Chagall (although I suspect is more a tribute of the Ghibli’s artists to the famous painter than her trying to mimic Chagall’s style).

Chag Purim Sameach! The holiday of Purim is one of the most lively and festive holidays on the Jewish calendar, celebrating the salvation of the Jewish People from Haman, the prime minister of the ancient Persian Empire, who sought to annihilate them. Purim traditions include the exchange of food and sweets, as seen in Marc Chagall’s mural study, in which two adults prepare to exchange gifts.
