Books I’ve read in 2021: Pandora’s Jar’ by Natalie Haynes | Myths and Legends | 5/5

“What Pandora brings to mortals is complexity. And that is true of all the women in this book […] Their stories should be read, seen, heard in all their difficult, messy, murderous detail. They aren’t simple because nothing interesting is simple.“

I have decided to participate in Wattpad’s Open Novella Contest!! The goal is to write 20,000 words in 13 weeks, using a prompt given from the ONC crew. I am thrilled to introduce the novella I will be working on for this contest: Alexis of Troy! This is a comedic story of a girl thrown into the legend of Troy. Aided by a frustrated goddess, Alexis must find a way back to her world without messing with the timeline. The only problem, she’s caught the attention of one Paris, Prince of Troy!

helen must be the only woman

who had been seduced by a goddess;

that when aphrodite bewitched paris,

so did she kiss helen.

I secretly wanna write my dissertation on the possibility thatHelen was never meant to be read as a woman, but an anthropomorphic concept of Greek culture(Hellenes)

and howHomer could have possibly used her image as a metaphor to recall a complex conflict way before his time, between the ancient Greeks from the mainland, versus those in Asia Minor. Especially since Troy takes place in Asia Minor where plenty of places were full of Greek culture like Ionia and Aeolis.

The survivors of the fight might have wanted to recount it in retellings that overtime romanticized the events in such a way that started from “Helen” being a concept to unify nationalistic identity for allied groups to stay united, and after countless re-tellings via oral tradition, changed from the anthropomorphic proud group identity into that of a very beautiful woman that men wanted to rescue by the time Homer wrote it down:

“The face that launched a thousand ships.”

Not to say a human woman’s face couldn’t launch a thousand ships (especially when she’s technically a demi-goddess like Helen of Troy), I’m just musing at the idea of how the ancient Greeks used women to talk about geographical concepts like Europa representing Europe as an example.I’m more intrigued at her name being exactly the same as the word for how the ancient and modern Greeks refer to themselves… Her name haunts my mind TBH…

Who did I seek?
whom did I think waited me there?
but I was not wanted,

no Old Man would ferry me out
to a craft, however old, however worn
and battered in foreign seas,

no one wanted me, Helena;
I am happy to see the dawn,
to remember the ladder

and the broken slat or rung
I forgot before;
remembering desolation, I remember

that other stretch of sea-weed
and the fire; I remember
the hands that ringed my throat

and no moment’s doubt,
this is Love, this is Death,
this is my last Lover.

Irene Papas as Helen of Troy in The Trojan Women(1971)

Trojans watch out! That’s not a real horse! Oh no they have AirPods in. They can’t hear us oh my god.

Paris, backing out after getting his ass handed to him within the first five minutes of his duel with Menelaus.

@raku—gaki and I are listening to Steven Fry’s Helen of Troy audiobook. There are two interpretations of her being taken by Troy- in one version she goes willingly, in the other she is kidnapped. There is a house in Pompeii with called the house of the Tragic Poet w bunch of frescos that were found recently. I find this fresco of Helen boarding the ship to be so compelling- she looks terrified. So I drew my version.

REVELATION OF THE DAY: Helen and Menelaus are such a power couple because they give off MILF AND DILF energy

like.

(looks at helen) (swoons)

(looks at menelaus) (swoons again)

(also menelaus loved helen 100% and that’s that, no I do not take constructive criticism)

“The Goddess of beauty, Aphrodite, come down to earth in mortal form. She will bring the disaster I have prophesied. Her name will be written in letters of fire: Helen. Helen of Troy.”

“And when, on Paris’ return, Cassandra saw Helen coming into Troy, she tore her hair and flung away her golden veil; but the city nevertheless received this woman as a jewel meant to enhance its beauty”.

Aphrodite, Cupid and Ares; Lambert Sustris, 1548-1550

Aphrodite; also known as Cytherea (Lady of Cythera) and Cypris (Lady of Cyprus.)

Origin: Greek mythology.

Goddess of love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation.
Roman equivalent is goddess Venus.

Abode: Mount Olympus.

Symbol: Dolphin, Rose, Scallop Shell, Myrtle, Dove, Sparrow, Girdle, Mirror and Swan, the Sea, pomegranates, sceptres, apples, Rose trees, lime trees, clams, and pearls.

Lovers: Hephaestus, Ares, Poseidon, Hermes, Dionysus, Adonis and Anchises.

Parents: Zeus and Dione.

Siblings: Ares, Athena, Apollo, Artemis Dionysus, Hebe, Hermes, Heracles, Helen of Troy, Hephaestus, Perseus, Minos, the Muses, the Graces, The Tree Nymphs, The Furies and the Gigantes.

Children: Eros, Phobos, Deimos, Harmonia, Pothos, Anteros, Himeros, Hermaphroditos, Rhode, Eryx, Peitho, Eunomia, The Graces, Priapus, Aeneas and Tyche (possibly.)

Like many of the Greek gods and goddesses, there is more than one story about her origins. According to Hesiod’s Theogony, she was born when Cronus cut off Uranus’s genitals and threw them into the sea, and she arose from the sea foam. According to Homer’s Iliad, she is the daughter of Zeus and Dione. According to Plato (Symposium 180e), the two were entirely separate entities: Aphrodite Ourania and Aphrodite Pandemos.

Due to her beauty, other gods feared that their rivalry over her would interrupt the peace among them and lead to war, so Zeus married her to Hephaestus, who, because of his ugliness and deformity, was not seen as a threat.

She played a role in the Eros and Psyche legend, and later was both Adonis’ lover and his surrogate mother. Many lesser beings were said to be children of Aphrodite.

Ancient Greeks identified her with the Ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor.

Other names: Acidalia, Cytherea and Cerigo.
