If anyone’s wondering what kind of human I am, I literally just gave someone a peptalk about giving a speech while emptying a can of corn into a tupperware in my dormhall’s bathroom.

Before I left for school, I bought some fake pink hydrangeas! I know buying fake plants can be cheesy, but they’re my favorite flower and I knew that having some flowers (even fake ones) around would brighten my days up. I put them in a cleaned out Tazo tea bottle and set them by my window. I think they’re cute!

A lot of dorm rooms (or apartments, for that matter) have the same universal rules: quiet hours, no pets, and no holes in the walls. Unfortunately, that means no pinning up frames for pictures! Thankfully, washi tape has saved all of us college students (and apartment renters).

Using washi tape to frame photos is not only cute and fun, but easy! All you need are your photos (in this case, I used motivational quotes), scissors, and washi tape!

My washi tape is actually “paper tape” that I bought from Target on clearance for less than $2 each (each pack comes with 4 rolls).

All you need to do is cut the washi (or paper) tape to your liking, and tape up! It comes off easy and doesn’t tear off any paint. Perfect!

Every time I do yoga, I am so surprised that I don’t go out and do it more often. I attended a free yoga class tonight on campus at our rec center, and realized how much I love it. The environment was so nice and comforting, and extremely positive. The instructor made a very important point to make sure we all understand that loving ourselves and finding inner peace is important, and we can’t beat ourselves up over mistakes and regrets.

Inner peace and self love are so important and I feel we so often forget to love ourselves. It was a nice reminder that we all need to take a moment to appreciate and tell ourselves all the positive things about us. Thanks, yoga instructor. Tonight was peaceful.

There are many things that I love about life, shoes being one of them.

Last night, my roommate and I went with one of our friends here to Ross. He has a car since he’s out of state, so we made a nice trip! Like any Ross trip, it was chaotic and messy BUT I found these beautiful bad boys (girls?).

I’ve been looking for a pair of brown oxfords for awhile. I found a pair I really loved at Aldo, but I didn’t love the price. I found these Madden Girl ones for $16.99 in my size and had to grab them!

They fit perfectly but unfortunately, the rain forbid me to wear them to class today. My fingers are crossed that tomorrow will be a nice enough day to whip these out and dance around campus in.

Something that I feel very bittersweet about is my eating schedule.

Eating in college is a weird thing. I live in a dorm, so I have a meal plan offered by my university. I selected the 100 Meals meal plan, meaning on average I will likely eat 1-2 meals a day, 5 days a week (in the dining hall). What’s frustrating though, is that when the dining hall is closed between meals, that’s when I find myself starving. In our dorm we have a LOT of breakfast food, like bagels, peanut butter, oatmeal, cereal, and milk, but I’m not always in the mood for cereal.

Right now I’m starving. I’m going to eat a bagel with peanut butter on it (Adam’s peanut butter, the good kind) and browse Tumblr before my roommate and I go off to do some yoga.

Dining hall food really isn’t that bad. Some of the food they offer isn’t always the best, but there are so many options, especially for someone like me who doesn’t eat meat. There are vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options always available, which is nice, and even healthy options, instead of just burgers and fries. I made a salad yesterday that had tofu cubes on it (I love tofu) and it was delicious. People who constantly say bad things about dining halls must not have had very good luck.

We even have fruit infused water: lemon-lime, lemon, grapefruit, cucumber, and orange. Orange water is nice. Now to get that bagel.

I’m pretty happy right now with how my dorm is turning out. It’s of course, not finished, but I’m really happy with how it is right now!

Today was a great day, actually. I tried waking up at 8 am to try preparing for my 8 am class every morning that starts on Wednesday, but I couldn’t. I finally got out of bed at 9.

My roommate and I met up with some close friends and went to the info fair together. It was pretty cool but I missed the one booth I was most interested in. Thankfully it’s going on tomorrow also so I’ll be able to get info on the group tomorrow! I signed up to join the Photo Club, about photography, since I brought my Nikon d40.

My roommate and I napped today and made a night trip into downtown, walking, with another friend of ours. All the dining halls close at 7 pm and don’t reopen until 10, so we needed to go downtown for dinner. Pita Pit made the walk worth it.

I’m excited for our dorm. We’ve been talking about ways to make it better, cuter, and much more practical. I can’t wait until it’s “finished,” whenever that may be.

I just spent my first night in my dorm! It was nice, but somewhat lonely without my roommate. Thankfully my roommate moved in today, who is also a good friend of mine. I helped her unpack and we “captained” our beds together.

We walked downtown from our dorm, which is about a 15 minute walk, and got some lunch. We went to this really cute bakery and each got these super delicious sandwiches. After we went to this food co-op, which only sells healthy, organic, and local products. We bought some groceries there since we couldn’t find a normal grocery store. The milk we bought is in a glass bottle, so when we’re finished, we return it and get it recycled! What we didn’t know though, is that we had to bag our own groceries and pay for the bags. We put all our groceries in my tote bag and carried it all the way back to our dorm that way.

Walking back was a lot of uphill, and so far we’ve only used stairs. I’m hoping that my roommate and I will have nice booties by the end of the quarter, and the year.

My first night was a good one. I ate oatmeal for breakfast, got dressed, and cleaned up my room a bit. Now it’s a little messy, but I’ll clean it up again by tonight.

I can hear my RA coming down the hall introducing herself to everyone on the floor. My roommate and I are both in our beds (I’m not wearing pants) so we’ll both have to get up in a moment to meet her.

I’m currently laying in my bed in my new dorm room! Moving in today was fine. I didn’t feel stressed, bored, or frustrated. My mom, my sister, my best friend, and my boyfriend all came up with me and helped me move in. We also got pizza and ice cream for lunch, but even with that break, moving in did not take long at all.

My mom “organized” my closet, but I’m very particular on my clothing so I’m going to reorganize it in a bit. It’s currently 10:16 pm, and since I’m not very tired, I’m going to finish putting other things away and decorating. The room is nice and a comfortable size. I like it.

Hopefully I won’t feel weird in the morning or anything. The only thing I have planned for tomorrow is talking to a financial aid adviser. Maybe I’ll try to find some other things to do. We’ll see!

It’s time to pack up and head back (or to college for the first time!) to college, and you only have so much room in your car to get your gear there. How do you prioritize your belongings and pack only what you need? After all, a dorm room is about half (or less) of the size of your room at your parents’ house. You don’t want to bring more than you need because you’ll probably just end up having to bring it all home again at summer break.
