365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…

May 19th - Venom

The one time villain and current hero known as Venom is a composite being made up of a sentient alien Symbiote with a liquid-like form, who survives by bonding with a humanoid host. This parasite/host combination affords the symbiotic being enhanced powers and refers to itself as ‘Venom.’

The Venom Symbiote has bonded with a number of different humans, including Peter Parker, Mac Gargan and Flash Thompson, yet its preferred and most frequent host has been Eddie Brock. Brock is a former journalist who bore a grudge against Spider-Man. The Brock/Symbiote version of Venom has had numerous battles against Spider-Man as well as other heroes of the Marvel Universe. Eventually Brock was able to tame the bloodlust of the Symbiote and Venom would go on to be a vigilante, eventually becoming a lethal protector of the innocent in San Francisco.  Eddie’s path toward becoming a hero has been turbulent, with stints as a governmental assassin and periodic relapses into villainy.

Temporarily parting ways with the Venom symbiote, Eddie began to seek redemption for his dark past, bonding to the Anti-Venom and Toxin symbiotes, before returning as Venom and finally becoming  a true hero.

Battles against Knull, the self-proclaimed ‘God of the Symbiotes,’ resulted in Eddie’s discovery that he has an adolescent-aged son named Dylan.  Eddie ended up freeing Knull from his prison so to save his son from the villainous Carnage, and then later defeated Knull during the Symbiote king’s invasion to Earth.  This resulted in Eddie becoming the new ‘King in Black’ and leader of the Symbiote Hive.  The Venom Symbiote has since been passed down to Eddie’s son, Dylan, whilst Eddie tends to the Hive.

A version of Venom/Eddie Brock has appeared in the Sony Pictures’ movies, Spider-Man 3, portrayed by actor Topher Grace, as well as Venom and Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage, where the character is portrayed by actor Tom Hardy.

The Symbiote first appeared in Marvel Super Heroes Secret War #8 (1984); Eddie Brock first appeared in Web of Spider-Man Vol. 1 #18 (1986); whereas Venom first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #300 (1988).

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…

May 18th - Hawkeye / Kate Bishop

Katherine ‘Kate’ Bishop grew up as the youngest daughter of an affluent Manhattanite family.  Although her father was an emotionally distant publishing magnate, Kate admired him and tried to gain his attention and approval during her summer breaks from boarding school.  Her mother Eleanor was estranged from her father and frequently absent on vacations until she died under mysterious circumstances when Kate was still young.

In her early adolescence, Kate’s father became involved in a criminal endeavor with the villain known as El Matador.  The scheme had soured and it resulted in El Matador kidnapping Kate.  She was rescued by the Avenger known as Hawkeye (Clint Barton) and the ordeal left a significant impression on her. Hawkeye became her role model and she strived to emulate him by helping people and learning archery (a skill she had a natural talent for).

As a teenager, Kate was sexually assaulted while walking home through Central Park.  It was a terribly traumatic event and her therapist suggested that she try to sublimate her feelings of helplessness by learning self defense.  Kate took the suggestion a step further, training tirelessly in multiple types of martial arts, learning swordsmanship and honing her skills at archery to a point that they bordered on the superhuman.

Kate was attending her older sister’s wedding when a group of armed men stormed the church and attempted to take the precession hostage.  The recently formed Young Avengers arrived on the scene to take down the criminals, but were still quite new at acting as a team ended up needing Kate’s help to save the day.  Afterward, Kate tracked down these young heroes and suggested she be to allowed to join their ranks.  In that Kate did not possess any actual super powers, the Young Avengers initially balked at this suggestion. Their minds were quickly changed, however, after Kate played a pivotal role in helping the team defeat Kang The Conquerer.  During the battle with the villain, Kate used weapons pilfered from the then-ruined Avengers’ Mansion, weapons that included Mockingbird’s staves, The Swordsman’s blade and Hawkeye’s bow and arrows.

Early on in her career as a heroine, Kate had trouble choosing a codename. After an encounter with Clint Barton (who was at the time operating under the moniker of Ronin), Kate was encouraged to take on the mantle of Hawkeye.

Following numerous adventures alongside the Young Avengers, Kate went on to become partners with Clint Barton.  Clint had resumed his role as Hawkeye and the pair decided that they could share the name.  Some time thereafter, Kate joined a new iteration of The Young Avengers and battled the inter-dimensional parasite known as ‘Mother.’

Following further adventures alongside Barton, Kate relocated to Los Angeles and began a private investigation firm.  She discovered that her mother was still alive and was in league with the villainous Madam Masque, leading to multiple altercations between Kate and Masque’s criminal organization.  Whilst living in LA, Kate helped to forge a new iteration of The West Coast Avengers.  The team had a number of adventures together before Kate ultimately decided that managing an Avengers squad was more trouble than it was worth.  As such, Kate relocated back to New York and more recently resumed her private investigatory work, taking a job for her older sister.

A version of Kate Bishop features in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting in the Disney+ Series Hawkeye, and portrayed by actress Hailee Steinfeld.  The heroine first appeared in the pages of Young Avengers Vol. 1 #1 (2005).

May 23rd - Dust

Sooraya Qadir is a young Mutant who was born in Kandahar, Afghanistan.  She discovered in her youth that she possesses the X-gene and was bestowed the ability to transform her body into a pliable cloud of dust-like particles.  She can control these particles with great precision, allowing her a degree of shapeshifting, a great resilience to injury and the capability to generate waves of dust that have both defensive and offensive capacities.

One day the young woman was accosted by a would-be slave trader who attempted to abduct her and tore off her traditional niqāb.  Instinctively, Sooraya lashed out with her powers, creating a torrent of sand-like dust that effectively flayed her attacker.

Accused of murder, Sooraya was rescued by the X-Men who were alerted to her plight by way of Cerebro.  Not seeing much choice in the matter, Sooraya accepted the X-Men’s offer for her to relocate to the United States and enroll in the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters.  She took on the alias of Dust and trained to better control her powers alongside her fellow young Mutants.  It took her some time to adjust to the very new world of super heroes; she was especially taken aback by the immodest nature of her colleagues’ tight-fitting costumes.  Still, her fellow students came to accept her regardless of her differences and so too did she become accepting of them.

After numerous adventures alongside the X-Men, Dust decided not to become a citizen of the Mutant nation of Krakoa, choosing instead to act as a member of the young superhero team known as The Champions.

Dust first appeared in the pages of New X-Men Vol. 1 #133 (2002).

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…

May 22nd - Komodo

Melati Kusuma was born in Malaysia and she and her family relocated to the United States during her infancy.  Melati grew up a bright and highly precocious child whose intellect often left her feeling impatient with those around her.  This contributed to her becoming quite impulsive and prone to distraction.  Just days after earning her license to drive a car, Melati was driving far too fast and was involved in a terrible accident that caused her to lose both of her legs.

Melati struggled with this turn of events and what she hated the most was feeling that other people pitted her.  She loathed being seen as just ‘the poor girl in the wheelchair.’

As such, Melati became socially withdrawn and dedicated herself to her academics.  She particularly excelled in the fields of biology and cellular genetics.  Melati earned a full scholarship to Empire State University where she became a prized pupil of Professor Curt Conners.  Conners had previously devised a formula that used reptilian genetic material as part of an effort to regrow his lost arm.  The formula had unexpected side effects and caused him to transform into the monstrous super villain known as The Lizard.  Conners had reverted to his human form with the help of Spider-Man and ultimately returned to teaching.  When Melati discovered Conner’s formula, she felt certain she could improve upon it and regrow her lost legs without side-effects.

Melati succeeded in this regard, yet not as completely as she had hoped.  Taking the formal did enable Melati to regrow her legs, but it also transformed her into a reptilian being, with enhanced straight and dexterity, sharpened claws and a long, prehensile tail.  Unlike Conners, however, Melati retained her original consciousness and could control this new form under her own volition.

Professor Conners was both proud and upset over what Melati had done; all of this was occurring in the backdrop of the conclusion of the first superhero Civil War and Conner’s made arrangements for Melati to be registered as a super powered individual and attend Camp Hammond to better learn how to use her newfound super abilities.  As such, Melati (who had opted for the new alias of ‘Komodo’) became one of the first trainees of the Avengers Initiative program.  Although she continued to struggle with impulsivity and rash decision making, Komodo excelled as a part of The Initiative and was quickly placed on the program’s field team.

Melati retained her reptilian form whenever she was conscious, yet reverted back to her human form whenever she slept.  She kept her original form a closely guarded secret and became very angry when her teammate, Hardball, accidentally saw her asleep, human and without her legs.  Hardball agreed to keep her secret and the pair ended up having a rather tumultuous romance together.

Komodo would go on to have numerous adventures as part of the Initiative, ultimately assigned to the Arizona-based squad, The Heavy Hitters.  Once the Initiative program was shut down, Komodo was invited to join the Avengers Academy but she turned the offer down.

The heroine first appeared in the pages of Civil War: Battle Damage Report #1 (2007).

May 21st - The Human Fly

The Human Fly was a young man who was severely injured during a car crash in North Carolina. His car was run off the road and his wife and children were tragically killed in the accident. After a long hospitalization, including a number of reconstructive surgeries in which 60% of his bone structure was replaced with steel, the young man was told that he would be unable to move for the rest of his life. Undaunted, he engaged in a grueling physical therapy.   After after several years of tireless training and rehabilitation he was able to attain peak physical shape.

From here he took on the masked identity of the ‘Human Fly.’ In this guise, he performed daredevil stunts to benefit various charities, especially those helping children with disabilities.

His activities often drew him into conflict with criminals, who were often seeking to rob the charity events at which he performed. Additionally, he drew the attention of Spider-Man, who thought he might be the villain of the same name, and over the course of his career he worked with other heroes including Ghost Rider, White Tiger and Daredevil.

The hero first appeared in The Human Fly #1 (1977).

May 20th - Tempo

The Mutant hero known as Tempo was born Heather Tucker.  Her Mutant abilities manifested in late adolescence where she discovered she possesses the ability of chronokinesis, the capacity to mentally manipulate the flow of time in her immediate vicinity.  With this ability she can cause the flow of time around her to slow to stagnant crawl or speed up to a rapid blur; and has learned to use this power in a host of different offensive and defensive fashions.  The power additionally enables her the ability to fly.

Tempo was originally recruited by the evil Mutant, Stryfe, who indoctrinated her into a Mutant Supremacist mindset.  She acted as a member of Stryfe’s Mutant Liberation Front and partook in battles against The New Mutants and X-Factor. Strife was ultimately defeated and the Mutant Liberation Front disbanded. Cable offered Tempo a place on his team, X-Force, but she declined opting instead to try to live a civilian life and go to college.  Unfortunately, The Superhuman Registration act made this an impossibility and Tempo was labeled a renegade super powered individual.

Angered over how the world treats her fellow Mutants, Tempo fell in with Mr. Sinister’s team, the Marauders.  Following the Messiah Complex storyline, however, she sided with The X-Men in creating the Utopia Mutant sanctuary off the coast of San Francisco.

More recently, Tempo has relocated to the Island of Krakoa and has shown interest in becoming a member of the X-Men.  She was in the running to be selected as a member of the new flagship X-Men squad, but ultimately lost out to Polaris.  Instead Tempo has joined Kitty Pryde’s squad of Marauders endeavoring on covert missions to protect Krakoa’s interests.

The former villain turned heroine first appeared in the pages of New Mutants Vol. 1 #86 (1989).

Mathias Schmied’s Unique Art Made From Comic Books

Born in Switzerland, Mathias Schmied manipulates comic books and magazine images to create wall installations, collages and drawings.  His works are pop images transformed.  Cut-out graffiti and superheroes take on all new representation and meaning through Schmied’s cautious hand and razor blade.  The easily recognizable content of Schmied’s found images becomes confused through his dissection.  Pages where all real content has been removed feel empty and even somewhat sad.  Depicting only what’s left behind from superhero stories feels like the newspaper without the news.  We can only begin to guess at what’s going on.
