Global protests as Brazil’s Supreme Court set to begin landmark indigenous rights ruling

Indigenous peoples from all over Brazil are protesting in a week-long action in Brasilia against the “Marco Temporal” (or “Time Limit Trick”), draft bill 490 known as the “Bill of Death”, and a series of other genocidal plans and actions by the Bolsonaro government.

The “Struggle for Life” (“Luta pela Vida”) global action is led by APIB – the Association of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil.

APIB have held a vigil outside the Supreme Court, which is due to restart voting on the Time Limit Trick, a proposal put forward by the agribusiness sector claiming that indigenous peoples only have the right to territory that they were physically occupying on October 5, 1988 – the day the current Constitution came into force.

A series of actions have taken place across the globe, including in San Francisco and London, by protestors calling for an end to the genocidal attacks being waged by President Bolsonaro and his supporters against Brazil’s indigenous peoples.

PL490 (a law project) suggests the end of demarcations and regularization of mining at indigenous lands in Brazil. This is a great attack against Indigenous people and the Enviroment.

Defending the Amazon

The Guardians are one of two indigenous groups on the eastern fringe of the Amazon that have taken radical action to reduce illegal logging. They have tied up loggers, torched their trucks and tractors, and kicked them off the reserves.

As a result, such logging has sharply declined in these territories. But the indigenous groups have faced reprisal attacks and death threats for their actions, raising fears of more violence in an area known for its lawlessness.

DEFEND THE LAND.

Brazilian tapir

Spots and stripes are found only on baby tapirs; adults are a uniform brown/gray. Like their name suggests, Brazilian tapirs live in South America and are endangered.

samanthali:

No essay or magazine article in the world can convey the stark divide between the extreme rich and the extreme poor as this photo does - taken of the Paraospolis Favela and Sao Paulo, Brazil. The photo is one of a series of amazing images showcased here on the deputydog blog.

This shows the social relationship of economy in space. It is the physical and visual representation of how we are divided into different classes; working class, middle class and upper class. It is the line of poverty (left) against wealth (right). Is this how our space should be used? Or should space be more integrated? Should space be defined by our income and working situations?

Languages that use “ciao” or a similar version descended from Italian as a greeting or an informal goobye

Present in: Portuguese (tchau), Spanish from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Costa Rica, Catalan, Sicilian, Maltese, Venetian, Lombard, Romansh, German (tschau), Swiss German, every Slavic language except Polish and Belarussian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian (tsau), Greek, Albanian (qao), Romanian (ceau), Hungarian (csaó), Somali, Amharic, Tigrinya, Malaysian. The Vietnamese “chào” is not related to Italian, so it’s unmarked there.

Edit: the map only includes those languages that use ‘ciao’ as the most common informal way of greeting/goodbye, not as part of slang, argots or people who use it just to sound cool. For example, in Portuguese, Maltese or Latvian it has surpassed the older forms of saying goodbye in informal situations for all social classes.
