Boletus Luridus (Lurid Bolete)

Ben found a number of these on the University of York campus following a heavy rain. I’m interested in learning to identify plants and fungi so I took a swing at this one using our Guide to Mushrooms and Toadstools of Britain and Northern Europe and I am pretty confident that that is what this bolete is. But correct me if I’m wrong! My only hang up is that it shows minimal signs of blue staining.

This one had already been rooted from the ground when he found it, with quite a few chunks taken out of it, so it was a bit dried out when I got to it. I wonder what was munching on it.

(Butternut)

More mushrooms! I found my first amanita today. Something not common around here. I loved wandering the woods finding new friends after all the rain!

The peak of summer is waning and Farm Girl is sliding into farm cleanup and less crazy tomatoes to deal with, but I still miss her so much!

Being alone in the woods gives me time to contemplate that longing. In the past, I’ve let it batter me. But Farm Girl is a partner I trust. I don’t feel alone or unwanted or ignored. I love her farm and her life. Missing her motivates me. It inspires my art. It pushes me to find new ways to love on her when I get to see her.

I admit I’m still excited for fall and the return of my Persephone <3

(Butternut)

Summer drags on but these cool days are fickle. I took some time away from the world to forage and expand my mushroom knowledge while Farm Girl tends to her heirlooms.

I’m always amazed at the beautiful world that thrives in the woods. There are hundreds of mushrooms I can’t identify but a few worth (sustainably) harvesting. Pictured here are boletes, chanterelle, coral, and (not a mushroom) ghost pipes.

And the plums and apples are here. I love my secret spots!
