Relief image on the Tablet of Shamash (Sippar, 800s BC).
This relief shows the sun god Shamash on the throne, in front of the Babylonian king Nabû-apla-iddina (r. 888 – 855 BC) between two interceding deities. The text tells how the king made a new cultic statue for the god and gave privileges to his temple.

In the mid 1910s films started to become longer, greater and more complex. Intolerance was so great and lavish that many people had never seen anything like it before (there had been other colossal films, most notably Cabiria, an italian epic, filmed in 1914)

LAHi Presents: Seriously Trivial
On the fifth day of the festival, which marked the new year, the Kings of Babylon were slapped hard as part of a ceremonial purification of the city. The king would enter the temple of Marduk, chief god of Babylon, and tell Marduk hadn’t done anything wrong in the past year. The high priest would then rise and slap the king as hard as he can with an open hand, hoping that he would cry from the blow, as tears were a sign that the king was telling the truth, and that Marduk approved of his rule for another year.
