The Getty Images Instagram Grant, run in collaboration with Instagram, supports visual artists using Instagram to tell important stories about communities underrepresented by mainstream media.

2015 grant recipient Dmitry Markov (@dcim.ru), resides in Pskov, Russia, and volunteers for multiple children’s charities. He received a grant for his Instagram portfolio that documents social issues close to his heart and features powerful portraits of the people he encounters everyday in places like railway stations and street markets.

“I started an Instagram account, using only my phone to document what I see not only in the charities I volunteer with, but in my everyday life in Pskov. Instagram has enabled me to share my photographs instantly, exposing under-told stories and exposing situations others, including city administrations, often turn a blind eye to.” [email protected]

The Getty Images Instagram Grant is accepting applications until April 12. All entrants must complete the online application at gtty.im/grants to be considered, and this year we’re encouraging visual artists to submit Instagram portfolios of a range of mediums including digital art, photography and video footage.

i’m thinking about charlotte brontë spending her last years editing and publishing her sisters’ writings and about christopher tolkien dedicating his life to the protection and meticulous reconstruction his father’s life’s work and about johanna van gogh publishing the letters between vincent and theo that would propel vincent van gogh into fame because she knew how much her husband had loved his brother, and about how so often art isn’t just a reflection of the artist’s mind and skills but a testament to the fact that they were loved

There seems to be a bit of a misconception regarding how some artists work. While I can’t speak for every artist, I can speak to my own experiences, along with the experiences that have been discussed with me by other artists and those who commission them.

If an artist is commissioned for work, but produces other pieces before the commission, don’t immediately assume the artist doesn’t value the commission. This is, quite likely, the opposite.

Many artists, myself included, will produce ‘practice’ pieces of art. Maybe we’re trying to work out a new technique, or we’re testing a new brush. It might just be that we’re trying to figure out how to approach a part of the commission piece and we’re testing that out in a work that might appear on the surface to be completely unrelated.

Sometimes, we’re working out how to approach the art at a time when we might be dealing with an art block. If you’re a writer, you may be familiar with writer’s block. This can happen in anycreative pursuit. If you’ve never personally experienced this, consider yourself lucky. But sometimes, what helps an artist come out of that is to create something random.

The point is, working these things out in a piece of our own means that the person who commissioned the work gets to benefit from the additional labor the artist put in to be able to work their commission.

Think of it as a warm-up exercise before a marathon.

Also, there’s a good chance yours isn’t the only commission they’re working on.

But here’s the thing that a lot of well-meaning people don’t even realize. When an artist is commissioned, they don’t stop being a person. Would you expect a chef who is asked to create a menu for a party not to cook for themselves in the meantime? I hope not.

Artists have personal lives, too. Taking art commissions is like any other job. There needs to be a work/life balance or both suffer. You wouldn’t want to pay for sub-standard work, right?

Anyway, please consider this when making a commission from an artist. Just because you see work you didn’t explicitly pay for being produced; try not to assume the person you’ve commissioned doesn’t value your commission. The artist is putting their name on what they produce for you. An artist’s name is part of their livelihood. They know that their next commission could rely on yourword of mouth.

They care. They care a lot.

03-21-21 – Outta Dodge

I haven’t posted in a couple weeks. I started a new job where I’ll have a 2 week on 1 week off schedule. It’s been a bit of an adjustment. It my 1 day off I get in the middle of my 2 weeks of work. My muse, @martasaur came to visit me! We hung out with our friend Nate for the day of whom is being a super awesome dude and giving me place to stay while I’m working at my new job in Kamloops!

I’d like to do more art, and I know I will on my week off. But today I made a very stylize self portrait!

03-08-21 – Best Boy

Today marks one full year of sitting down and drawing something every day. I figured what would be better to draw than what I started this year long challenge in the first place. So here is a good an honest portrait of my best friend, Jesse.

I wish I had left more time in the day to work on this. Now after a year of building this habit, I hope to work on more detailed art projects that involve a little effort every day.

Thank you to everyone that has enjoyed and appreciated looking at the stuff I sketched over this last year ♥️

03-03-21 – Puff Wisely

Character Description: This is Puff Wisely, a kind hearted necromancer. Puff has a unique method of smoking a small portion of the remains of the dead so that he may communicate beyond the vale of the living. He uses he high levels of empathy and charisma to find out what unfinished business restless spirits have. This provides him with a large catalog of quests to fill his time, so that the dead can truly move forward into the afterlife.

I stepped way outta my comfort zone by trying to paint this with oils. Painting is something that I want to get better at. I’m by no means 100% happy with how the painting turned out. I think it’s a far too muddy looking and oils is just not a medium I’m experienced with yet. But I had fun with it anyway.

03-02-21 – Not to code.

I tried to do a similar style drawing as the one I did last night but with plumbing instead of electrical. I didn’t have a reference or very much time to draw tonight so it doesn’t look very good, but I just need to get the idea outta my head.

03-01-21 – Electrical Aesthetic

I recreated an old photo of power lines my electrician friend Jesse has on his fridge

02-26-21 – Feyd makes a friend…

This was a color practice for character that I was thinking about painting. After some thinking, I’d like to work on my painting skills a little bit more before tackling the types of details and textures I’d like to implement into the design.
