Lower Jackson Mound

This particular mound is a whole 2000 years older than the Powers Point mound complex yet the builders that raised Poverty Point decided to perfectly align Moinds E, A, and B with it… to true North…

Watson Brake Archaic Mound Site,” an interpretive charcoal sketch by Martin Pate. Courtesy National Park Service, Southeast Archeological Center.

Similar to Poverty Point in West Carroll Parish and reported to be older than the pyramids in Egypt, the area is believed to contain a great wealth of knowledge about the earliest settlers of northeastern Louisiana.

Hill East contains a group of effigy mounds thought to represent a coyote, bison, bird, beaver and coiled snake.

The bird mound also has been interpreted as the pregnant bird woman or the corn lady. Because of the direct east-west alignment of the ridge, Hill East is a gathering place to observe equinox sunrises and sunsets. The panoramic vista is unique to the lower Wisconsin River Valley.

Fitzhugh Mounds is an archaeological site in Madison Parish, Louisiana from the Plaquemine\Mississippian period dating to approximately 1200–1541 CE. It is the type site for the Fitzhugh Phase(1350-1500) of the Tensas Basin Plaquemine Mississippian chronology.
